No one should have to work or live in conditions like those described in this letter. If these reports are accurate, they paint a picture of a jail that has been neglected for far too long. A broken air conditioning system in the middle of a Tennessee summer is more than an inconvenience—it becomes a safety issue for correctional officers, civilian staff, medical personnel, and inmates alike. The men and women who work inside the Shelby County Jail deserve a safe workplace. They should never have to choose between doing their job and risking their own health. Likewise, we have a legal and moral responsibility to provide constitutional conditions of confinement for those in our custody. For years, I’ve been saying that the problems at 201 Poplar did not happen overnight, and they won’t be solved with excuses. Deferred maintenance, poor planning, staffing shortages, and a lack of accountability have created a crisis that continues to put lives at risk. As your next Sheriff, I will make the condition of our facilities a top priority. That means aggressively addressing critical infrastructure failures, demanding accountability, improving medical operations, and ensuring our deputies have the resources they need to safely do their jobs. I will also communicate openly with the public and elected officials instead of allowing problems to grow in silence. Shelby County cannot continue reacting to one emergency after another. We need leadership that identifies problems before they become crises. It’s time for leadership that shows up, takes responsibility, and fixes what’s broken.
