“Nadja is a book of parts,” Susan Rubin Suleiman writes. “Introspective autobiography, political manifesto, treatise on aesthetics, walking tour of Paris, photo album, celebration of the irrational...and, yes, love story.” https://t.co/bFVhKfFi2O

I repeat, you do NOT need self-help books. You need to get lost in immortal works of fiction.
You need to read 'The Brothers Karamazov' and slowly realize that each brother lives inside your own heart.
You need to witness how each of them wrestles with passion and hatred and guilt.
You need to wrestle with faith and doubt, love and resentment, freedom and duty. Then you must come to terms with the tension of these within you — with your own contradictions and shortcomings.
Great fiction will expand your capacity to see the world in its full complexity. You'll see that truth is often found not in the extremes, but in the tension between the extremes.
The questions that truly matter will not be solved by "self-help" or productivity hacks. These questions can never be finally "solved" by your own force of will or rational understanding.
Great fiction will help you battle for your soul.
The illusion that we think in language, exposed by a study that asks people to report what they're thinking when probed at random intervals. “'People come in thinking to themselves that they are talking to themselves all of the time.' On beeps where they reported inner speech [the researcher] says, 'I would ask them what exactly they are saying to themselves—a pretty reasonable, straightforward question. When they [consistently] can’t answer that question, they come to the conclusion, "Well, I wasn’t really talking to myself. I don’t really talk to myself."’” I Didn’t Know My Mind Was So Strange Until I Started Listening to It https://t.co/klq56HWH04
We’re sharing new research with @apolloaievals on reward-seeking—when models follow what they believe a grader rewards rather than what users or developers want—and a new method, Contrastive SDF, for measuring how strongly such beliefs shape behavior.

Two years of aerobic exercise made the hearts of out-of-shape 50-year-olds behave like hearts up to 20 years younger.
Researchers randomized 61 sedentary adults, average age 53, to two years of real training or gentle yoga, then measured heart stiffness the hard way: a catheter threaded straight into the heart. The trained group's fitness rose 18% and the main chamber went from stiff to elastic, taking in more blood at lower pressure. "20 years younger" describes the size of the stiffness improvement, not a literal age, but the effect was real.
The heart stiffening long blamed on age is partly the cost of sitting, and in middle age it's still reversible.
87.6% of surveyed inflammatory bowel disease patients said marijuana improved their quality of life, while 61.3% said it improved their ability to live independently, according to a new study from the University of Florida. https://t.co/rdRpxccgge

Props to OpenAI for publishing this post on some safety and alignment issues observed in internal deployments - there are many counter-incentives to publishing stuff like this, but by making it public we all get better info about safety at the frontier. https://t.co/7UKWrLSI3y

Christopher Nolan praises Curry Barker's #Obsession and says #TheOdyssey has whet his appetite to make more horror:
"I’ve always believed that horror as a genre has to be approached very carefully from a conceptual point of view. In other words, you have to have an amazing idea. When you go see a film like 'Obsession,' that’s an amazing idea. That movie works like a motherfucker. It’s not about the technical side. It’s not about what technical itches I would have to scratch. It’s about story. So I’m always looking."
