@mckddnh@GMHikaru@MagnusCarlsen@chesscom@lachesisq That is an interesting point, but I think it comes to the same thing. It’s not a zero sum game. A larger market will draw more sponsorship. “Serious” chess events may be a smaller percentage of a larger market, but that’s not because they shrank, it’s because the market grew.
@GMHikaru@MagnusCarlsen@chesscom@lachesisq A similar argument was made about the “death of PC gaming” at the hands of console gaming. Despite the fact the PC games sales never dropped, the market just expanded. You see similar flawed arguments about mobile gaming today.
@GMHikaru@MagnusCarlsen@chesscom@lachesisq The flaw with Yan’s criticism is the “displacing and replacing” aspect, because it’s simply not true. Pogchamp viewers are not replacing established chess fans, chess is just reaching more and new people.

Scientists alive today outnumber all the scientists who ever lived up to 1980. Or, in other words, 90% of all the scientists who ever lived, are alive today. A simple statistic capturing the power of the exponential growth in science over the past century https://t.co/k9K3vQnkr4

No one is saying they should not have written the review, or hidden it. Just that they should have given Neil the option of not having this shoved in his face
