#ONStorm#ONwx WOW! A possible derecho is currently underway across portions of Illinois and Indiana, with blanket tornado warnings being issued along the leading edge of this powerful storm complex.
Radar velocity data is estimating wind gusts in excess of 150 km/h in parts of the complex as it races eastward towards the South Bend area. Based on its current track, this complex could come fairly close to the Lake Erie region over the next several hours.
The latest model data continues to keep the main complex well south of Southern Ontario. However, we can’t completely rule out additional storms developing along the northern side of the system across southern Michigan. If that happens, some of those storms could eventually clip portions of Essex County later today.
Environment Canada currently has Essex County under a ‘moderate’ risk for thunderstorms today, with potential hazards including wind gusts up to 90 km/h and up to toonie-sized hail.
At this point, there is no indication that the intense winds currently being observed across Illinois and Indiana will make it into our region. The main thing we’ll be watching is whether any new storms can develop farther north as the complex continues southeastward.
We’ll be watching this very closely over the coming hours and will keep you updated if there are any developments that could pose a threat to our region.
