Turkey systematically violated the provisions of the Treaty of Lausanne concerning the protection of the Greek minority. Although the treaty explicitly guaranteed the safety, property, and rights of the Greeks, the actions of the Turkish state during the 20th century led to the near-total decimation of the community. Key violations by Turkey against the minority include: 1. Economic ruin (Capital Tax – 1942): During World War II, Turkey imposed the *Varlık Vergisi* (Capital Tax), which was applied in a discriminatory and ruinous manner against non-Muslim minorities (Greeks, Armenians, and Jews). Those unable to pay the exorbitant sums saw their assets confiscated and were themselves deported to forced labor camps in Aşkale. 2. Violent persecution and pogroms (The September Events – 1955): On September 6–7, 1955, a violent pogrom against the Greeks of Istanbul, orchestrated by the Turkish state, broke out. Dozens of people lost their lives and women were abused, while thousands of Greek homes, shops, schools, and churches were looted and completely destroyed. 3. Mass expulsions (1964) Through a secret decree in 1964, Ankara summarily expelled approximately 12,000 Greek nationals who were living legally in Constantinople. They were permitted to take with them only 20 kilograms of luggage and the equivalent of 20 dollars. This forced their families (who held Turkish citizenship) to follow them as well, effectively stripping the City of its Greek element. 4. De-Hellenization of Imbros and Tenedos Article 14 of the Treaty stipulated a special status regarding self-administration, local policing, and the protection of Greek rights on these two islands. Turkey completely violated this article: it abolished Greek education, closed schools, expropriated Greek lands, established open prisons for high-security inmates on the island, and brought in settlers en masse, forcing the Greeks to emigrate. 5. Interference with Religious Freedom: Turkey violates Article 40 of the Treaty, which guarantees the right of minorities to manage their own religious institutions. A prime example is the closure of the Halki Theological School in 1971—which remains closed, thereby preventing the training of new clergy for the Ecumenical Patriarchate—as well as the continuous restrictions and interference by the Turkish Directorate General of Foundations (a state agency) in the management of assets and the elections of Greek charitable foundations (as confirmed by recent rulings against Turkey by the European Court of Human Rights). The Consequence of Violations: Due to these practices, the Greek minority in Turkey—which numbered over 110,000 people in 1923—has shrunk today to fewer than 2,000–3,000 individuals, mostly elderly; this fact demonstrates in practice the complete disregard for both the spirit and the letter of the Treaty of Lausanne on the part of Ankara.
@SercanErgr3037@Sunniaga@Redavv@GaffarYakinca You must be confusing Turkey with Greece. Along with Turkey, Germany has been our greatest enemy. On the flip side you secretly supported the nazis &without the Russians assisting you in your fake war of independence, you and Mustafa would be in central Asian where you belong.
@Sunniaga@SercanErgr3037@Redavv@GaffarYakinca 😂😂😂 keep crying 😥😥😥
We came - we conquered. The Aegean is a Greek lake. You know it, Erdogan knows it, Mustafa Kemal accepted it. We gave you Anatolia. Our ancestors have been in the Aegean for 4000 years. It’s still your first day of school.
@szgnorc@anatoliannn@GaffarYakinca If Greece were weak, Turkey would have invaded. That’s why Turkey attacked poor little defenceless Cyprus and now Syria.
@szgnorc@anatoliannn@GaffarYakinca 400 years of brutal occupation not to mention the Greek genocide and the Istanbul pogrom. You cannot rewrite history. In regards to your comment about the citizens of Constantinople, this is what you said in 1821. You have always had the numerical advantage. Means little
@szgnorc@anatoliannn@GaffarYakinca I hope there is peace between the two countries however given the violent and aggressive history of Turkey towards Greece, it could very well be possible a war breaks out. If we extend to 12nm and Turkey attack. Greece will never attack first. That I can assure you.
