A summary of what Zach Foster, Jew, phd in Palestinian history from Princeton university, said on the podcast of Owen Jones: 1. Israel is making the world less safe for Jews, because its violent actions fuel protests and hatred. This is also because Israel is claiming to represent ALL Jews. When people then see this nation engage in atrocious violence against innocents, it’s Jews all around the world who are held responsible for this violence. 2. Books about the Holy Land were hugely popular in 19th century America. The books ignored the people who were living there. The Zionist narrative was: ‘land without people for people without land’. This idea became deeply engrained and fueled Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. 3. Most articles about Palestinians in American mainstream media are not written by Palestinians. Only one to two percent of the thousands of articles written about Palestinians in the New York Times and the Washington post are written by Palestinians. 4. Israeli suffering gets way more attention than Palestinian suffering. 5. When did people start calling themselves Palestinians? In the last decade of the 19th century. The Palestinian identity arises at the same time Egyptian, Syrian, Jordanian identities arise. Were there Palestinians in 1948? Yes. The narrative that there never were Palestinians and that they are an ‘invented’ people is simply not true. This idea is used to displace them. Because how could one displace a people that doesn’t even exist? 6. The narrative that Israel ended its occupation of Gaza in 2005 is fiction. They only withdrew their 6,000 very much illegal settlers. Many international organisations consider Israel to be the occupying power in Gaza. They control the sea, the air, the borders and even the electricity. The reason those 6,000 were withdrawn so Israel could claim it was no longer responsible for Gaza. The Israeli army was bogged down in Gaza. The IDF took casualties. Gaza was a liability. Ariel Sharon reasoned: It is easier to control what goes in and out of Gaza when we don’t have settlers there. 7. There were free and fair elections in Gaza in 2006. The Americans encouraged this. Hamas won a majority of the legislative seats. The US didn’t like the result and backed the loser, Fatah, in trying to cling to power. They tried to undermine the election, which led to a civil war in Gaza and Hamas won. Hamas did take power by force, but only after the loser, armed by the US, refused to step down after losing a free and fair election. 8. Israel made lots of mistakes in dealing with Hamas. Between 1967 and 1987 Israel militarily occupied both Gaza and the West Bank. They deny millions of Palestinians the right to vote, they kill scores of Palestinians every year, displace thousands, demolish lots of houses. This leads to the first Intifada. Israel kills 142 people in Gaza in the first year. At first the intifada was peaceful, but Israel cracked down hard. Originally Hamas was just a charity organization. They radicalize when Israel slaughters 142 people. Only in 1988 do they become a violent militant organization. In February 1988 Hamas travels to Tel Aviv to say they want peace. If Israel withdraws, if they allow Palestinians to name their representatives and if Israel releases Palestinian prisoners. Israel refuses and triples its settler presence in the West Bank. After 1988 Hamas primarily targets Israeli soldiers. Only in 1996 does the US label Hamas a terrorist organization. Israel had no intention of making peace. Israel expels 400 Hamas militants to Lebanon. There they forge an alliance with Hezbollah. So Israel itself drove Hamas into the arms of Hezbollah. 9. Hamas published op-eds in the UK based newspaper The Guardian saying it wants peace. They ask for an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, a capital in East Jerusalem and a just solution to the Palestinian refugee problem. This is in line with how the international community sees things. 10. Netanyahu used Hamas as an asset. Israeli officials said that Hamas is the asset and the PA is the liablity. Fatah and Hamas tried to reconcile. They agreed to a unity government, but this was not recognized by Israel or the US. Israel could have a negotiated peace then, but it would have had to make real concessions. Israel has never been interested in this. It does not want to give the Palestinians real sovereignty. Israel wanted to keep Hamas in power. Israel allowed money to be moved to Hamas via Israeli held territory. The idea was to keep Hamas in power, but weak. This keeps Palestinian leadership divided. Israel can use Hamas as an excuse as to why a deal is never possible, so Israel can focus on expanding the settlements in the West Bank. The ultimate goal is to annex the West Bank. 11. The strategy to starve Gaza goes back all the way to 1991. Until 1991 Israel encouraged Palestinians to work in Israel. Overnight it decided that every Palestinian needed to get an individual work permit to work in Israel. Palestinians can earn more in Israel than in Gaza. Israel made it impossible for firms in Gaza to be competitive with Israeli companies. Israel closed most Palestinian bank, so Palestinians don’t have many options to borrow money to start a business. In 1991 40 percent of them have to apply for work permits. In 1996 there is a 70 percent unemployment rate in 1996. They survive thanks to food handouts. Hundreds of thousands of Gazans are food insecure between 2002 and 2004. Everything gets dramatically worse in 2007. Israel calculates the caloric needs for the population in Gaza and they allow that much food into Gaza. Very few households in Gaza can put enough food on the table. They forego medical services and utilities to be able to pay for food. 12. As a Jew he often asks himself why so many German did nothing to stop the Holocaust. Gaza is only an hour’s drive away from Telaviv. The horror is not far away. How can they tolerate it? Israelis are fed lots of propaganda from childhood. They are terrified of Arabs. They are too scared to drive to an Arab village. They are told by the media that Palestinians are cockroaches. Military service is compulsory for Jews in Israel. It’s a rite of passage. There is lots of indoctrination in Israel. Many Israelis are reservists till they hit middle age. They are convinced they are doing good in the world and see themselves as incapable of committing atrocities. They think it goes against the DNA of Israeli institutions to do wrong. Why do 95 percent of Jewish Israelis support a military campaign that is almost unanimously condemned as genocide? It’s because Israel is set up to serve Jews, to protect them. It’s not set up to protect Palestinians. At the end of the day the deaths of Palestinians do not matter. 13. A glimmer of hope: More Americans and Europeans are talking about this issue. The violence was escalating long before October 7th and this was not discussed. 60 percent of Americans support a ceasefire (in early 2024). The ICJ ruling is a historic moment of huge significance. It can function as a tool for all those supporting the Palestinians in their struggle to free themselves.
