Tonight, that caught up with us.

When a team goes down to 10 men, the responsibility shifts.

You control tempo.
You stretch the pitch.
You create overloads.
You increase crossing volume.
You force defensive rotations.

We did none of that consistently.

Instead, it felt disjointed.
Shape unclear. Roles overlapping. No defined central control.

That’s tactical responsibility.

Now the midfield:

Casemiro is doing the defensive screening.
But when he leaves, the structure collapses.

That’s not coincidence anymore — that’s pattern.

Mainoo is talented, but receiving and recycling the ball is not the same as progressing the game. As an 8, you must:

• Drive forward
• Break lines
• Accelerate tempo
• Support transitions

That level wasn’t there tonight.

And when the midfield lacks progression, possession becomes sterile.

We ended up with the ball — but no authority.

That’s the difference between having possession and controlling a game.

Now the bigger issue:

We don’t have a clearly repeatable attacking structure in sustained possession.

It often feels reactive — waiting for a mistake, a moment, or individual brilliance.

That’s not sustainable at elite level.

If standards are truly elite, then:

We have two midfielders that can't run. You can make an excuse for Casemiro but what's Mainoo's excuse?

If at 20 Mainoo can't run, doesn't have ample positional sense or even enough physicality for this league then it's a waste of time.

Mainoo doesn’t have the physicality or mobility to play in a midfield 2, certainly not in this league. You hated Amorim for it, and you hate it even more that he was right. Go and look at our possession numbers since Mainoo came into the team. You’ll find it quite interesting.
