Right now, ACF and the @MackayConsGroup are fighting Whitehaven Coal at the Queensland Land Court, to stop this polluting mine from going ahead!

👀 This week’s proceedings have been full of contradictions.

Whitehaven has told the Queensland Land Court that the opinion of the International Court of Justice is “irrelevant” to the Court’s decision on Australia’s largest new export coal mine... 🤔

... This is despite Whitehaven accepting that the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion “sets a standard to which states internationally need to apply” and therefore appears to accept that the Australian government will need to shift its current approach to climate pollution.

So, which is it?

The Chief Executive of the Dept. of Environment, Tourism Science and Innovation disagreed with Whitehaven’s “irrelevant” argument and told the Court the Queensland Human Rights Act specifically allows the Court to consider international law.

We either support international law, or we don’t, and selective application destroys trust in collective standards the world requires.

Trumps actions are a violation of international law and, along with Israel’s illegal attacks on sovereign countries, put all of us at risk.

International law clearly lays out the circumstances in which a country can use aggression against another, whether UN sanctioned or self defence, and this is a clear violation. Australia should make that clear.

Meanwhile, more Palestinians are being killed every day, while trying to get food for their families. Apartheid is increasing with more illegal settlements, and the duty to prevent genocide is ongoing.

Let’s always be mindful of our Australian communities affected.

While Trump clothes bombs in language of triumph, nationalism and his own glorification, seeking awards, the risks are extreme and the costs increase, including to families of Aussies. Doesn’t matter if they’re Israeli, Palestinian, Iranian, Syrian or Lebanese. They’re family to someone.

We desperately need sanity, equality, reform of a rules based system that works for both global south and north, accountability for all violators, and human rights for all.
