Africa is bigger than all of Europe, China and the USA together.
Africa is truly like another planet ~ A Thread 🧵
1. Magnificent visual of the River basins of Africa
When you’re building a new product, you’re often thinking about all the new things people are going to be able to do with it.
But there’s a better question to ask: What are people going to stop doing once they start using your product?
What does your product replace? What are they switching from? How did they do the job before your product came along? Whatever it is, it’s already being done some other way.
Habit, momentum, familiarity, anxiety of the unknown – these are incredibly hard bonds to break. When you try to sell someone something, you have to overcome those bonds and break the grip of that gravity.
So, when you’re thinking about your product, think about what it replaces, not just what it offers. What are you asking people to leave behind when they move forward with you? How hard will that be for them? How can you help them overcome everything that’s tugging them in the opposite direction?
Coding copilots/assistants feel like Ozempic in reverse.
Short-term results increased.
But long-term consequences unknown.
Over reliance = little to no foundational knowledge being built.
Excellent if short-term results are paramount but not so great if long-term skill is the goal.
Expanded.
If your goal is to develop programming skill, use the coding assistants as tutors rather than slaves.
They are incredibly helpful but can sometimes include hidden bugs (like any programmer).
Hidden bugs are often more detrimental than known bugs as their effects can continue for an indefinite period of time.
Avoid blindly trusting the output of a coding assistant (especially if it's lengthy).
Instead, use them to accelerate the things you already know/could code yourself if given enough time.
Or, use them to help explain parts of the code you're not aware of/didn't know existed.
In short: trust but verify.
If your goal is to get an app/function working in the shortest amount of time possible, coding assistant all the way. Just be aware that expanding on this will likely require quite a bit of effort.
The analogy to Ozempic (a weight loss drug) is to highlight how short-term results can be achieved but it doesn't necessarily leave you with the skills for perpetuating these results long-term.
If you were to take Ozempic *in addition* to developing healthy eating, movement and sleep patterns, that's a better solution as the habits will be and are more valuable than the drug.
Similar to if you were to use coding assistants *in addition* to studying/practising the code on your own + exploring new problem spaces, that's a better solution than solely relying on a coding assistant.
A l'episodi en què en Shin Chan va a Barcelona, a la mateixa versió japonesa en Josep li ensenya a dir "molt bo" en català. Cada idioma ho va adaptar diferent:
I'm thrilled to announce the release of the digital version of "Hands-On Large Language Models" 🎉
The book contains more than 250 visuals (in color!) to help you understand the inner workings of LLMs and how to use them effectively.
