Unable to see their own hands in front of their masks, those American boys crawled across the freezing sea floor by touch alone.
Their fingers went numb inside thick rubber gloves as they wrapped heavy steel chains around sunken ships and jagged wreckage in the dark.
Twelve hours a day.
Shivering uncontrollably between dives, drinking hot water just to feel their lips again, and diving right back down.

In days, they hauled 280 cubic yards of lethal steel out of the channel.
They opened the port.
And when the first massive fuel tanker glided safely into Hachinohe to bring heat to a million freezing Japanese families, your divers stood on the icy deck, covered in black grease, cheering like kids.

No cameras were watching at the bottom of that freezing harbor.
They risked drowning in the dark so our children wouldn't freeze in the night.
