This is a fair demand, and to understand it, you have to go back to 1569 when Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator created his maps. They were designed specifically for maritime navigation because they accurately preserve directions and angles, allowing sailors to easily plot courses.

Converting the spherical Earth onto a flat map inevitably causes distortion. The Mercator map increasingly stretches out landmasses the further they are from the equator and closer to the poles.

As a result, northern regions like North America, Europe, and Russia appear disproportionately massive, while areas near the equator, such as Africa and South America, appear relatively smaller.

Africa's demand is fair because, on a traditional Mercator map, Greenland appears to be roughly the same size as Africa. In reality, the African continent is approximately 14 times larger than Greenland.

There is also a psychological impact, as maps guide education, nourish the imagination, and influence collective perceptions of the world. Thus, visually shrinking Africa systematically diminishes its perceived importance and scale on the global stage.

Therefore, the African Union is advocating for the widespread adoption of "equal-area" maps, specifically highlighting the Equal Earth projection introduced in 2018. This newer projection factors in the Earth's curvature to depict continents in proportions that reflect their true surface areas.
