After 135 years in an unmarked grave, Civil War veteran Private Sandy Wills was laid to rest with full military honors this August in Memphis, TN. The veteran, who was born enslaved and he fought for freedom in Lincoln’s army, honor was restored by his great-great-great-granddaughter Cheryl. This Veteran’s Day, let’s remember the countless Black heroes like Sandy, whose sacrifices echo through history.
