pokemon that were impossible to find.
back in 2016, pokemon sun and moon added a new pokemon called mareanie, the preevolution of toxapex. one of the strongest defensive pokemon in competitive play.
mareanie had no normal wild encounters at all. the only way to find it was through an extremely specific sos battle chain. first, you had to fish for corsola, which already had a bad encounter rate of just 5% on route 9 and only 1% in other fishing spots.
once you finally found a corsola, you had to weaken it and use an adrenaline orb to trigger an sos call. even then, there was only a 20% chance that corsola would call a mareanie instead of another corsola.
because mareanie is literally corsola’s natural predator in the lore’s game, it would immediately start attacking and trying to faint the corsola you needed to keep alive. if the corsola fainted before you could catch the mareanie, the entire chain broke and you had to start fishing all over again. you couldn’t even throw a pokeball while two wild pokémon were on the field.
this ridiculous mechanism made mareanie one of the most annoying pokemon to obtain in the entire generation.

VGC players question - planning on preparing for Champions release. Do we think it's worth getting some in game teams ready (EVs) in ZA and transferring over to Home? I used Chimecho and Froslass on ZA ranked but will want to respec out of HP. 😅
