‘Jaime, can you call Shell?’: Tessie Sy-Coson pitches refinery plan to Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala
A light moment at InvestPH had SM Group vice chair Teresita Sy-Coson nudging Ayala Corp. chair Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala to push for a refinery.
“Please do it for the country. We have to be a bit more independent,” Sy-Coson said of the multi-billion dollar investment.
Zobel, whose brother Fernando sits on the board of Shell Pilipinas, played along.
“I would gladly invest in it together with you, Tessie,” he said, drawing laughs from the crowd.
Petron Corp., backed by tycoon Ramon S. Ang’s San Miguel Corp., is now the country’s sole remaining refinery, processing crude into fuel.
The business leaders later agreed there was a need for deeper collaboration as the Philippine economy reels from the impact of ongoing energy market disruptions.
