He was just 16 when he looked at a barren sandbar in Assam and saw something others couldn’t: a forest waiting to exist.

From that vision grew one of India’s most extraordinary environmental transformations.

At the heart of Majuli, the world’s largest river island in the Brahmaputra, Jadav ‘Molai’ Payeng began planting a single sapling every day in 1979. No crowd, no funding, just consistency.

Decades later, that quiet habit has become a living ecosystem spanning roughly 1,360 acres, now home to dense trees, birds, deer and other wildlife
Known as the “Forest Man of India”, Jadav Payeng has reportedly planted over four crore trees across his lifetime, a feat that continues to inspire climate action conversations across the world.

Honoured with the Padma Shri in 2015, his journey is a reminder that impact does not need permission, only persistence.

On this World Environment Day, Jadav Payeng’s story reminds us that one person’s dedication can grow forests, protect wildlife, and nurture the planet for generations to come.

Navaratri: A Nine Night Pilgrimage Up the Spine

While the world outside turns in a whirl of vibrant chaniya cholis, rhythmic dhol, and the gentle glow of diyas, a far more ancient and silent dance is underway. Navratri is not merely a festival, it is a map. It is a sacred, temporal architecture built for a single, profound purpose, to guide the soul on a nine night pilgrimage from the dense earth of our being to the luminous sky of consciousness

The Nava Durgas are not merely deities to be worshipped from afar. They are personified states of energy, benevolent guides who preside over specific power centers along our spine.

The Foundation: Establishing the Earth (Nights 1-3)

The journey begins not with a flight, but with a grounding. The first three nights are our foundation.

· Shailaputri (The Daughter of the Mountain) is Muladhara, the root chakra. She is our connection to the earth, our stability. Her energy is the primal shakti that says, "I am." Before we can ascend.

· Brahmacharini (The Austere One) is Svadhishthana, the sacral chakra. She is the potent energy of discipline and tapas. She transforms base desire into a focused stream of creative potential.

· Chandraghanta (She Whose Bell is like the Moon) is Manipura, the solar plexus. Her fierce form is not for battle in the outer world, but for the inner conquest of fear, shame, and ego. The sound of her bell is the vibration that shatters the illusions that bind us to our lower nature.

The Ascent: The Blossoming of the Heart (Nights 4-6)

With a stable foundation and purified power, the journey turns inward and upward, to the seat of the soul.

· Kushmanda (The Creator of the Cosmic Egg) is Anahata, the heart chakra. She is the radiant burst of cosmic life, the sun at the center of our personal universe. Here, the energy is no longer just about personal power,it expands into unconditional love and compassion.

· Skandamata (The Mother of Skanda) is Vishuddhi, the throat chakra. The nurturing love of the heart finds its pure expression here. She represents the purification of communication, where every word becomes a blessing, and every sound resonates with truth.

· Katyayani (The Warrior Goddess) is Ajna, the third eye chakra. Her sword is not made of steel, but of discernment. It cuts through the final veil of duality, the illusion that we are separate from the divine.

The Summit: Dissolution into Light (Nights 7-9)

The final ascent is the most intense, for it requires the death of the individual self to be reborn into the universal.

· Kalaratri (The Dark Night) is the fierce, purifying force that thrusts the energy into Sahasrara, the crown chakra. She is the dark, formless vacuum that consumes all that we thought we were,our attachments, our identity, our final resistance.

· Mahagauri (The Extremely Fair One) is the radiant dawn that follows the dark night. She is the soul, now utterly purified by its journey. She shines with the luminescence of a billion moons. This is the state of supreme peace and purity, consciousness resting in its own native light.

· Siddhidatri (The Bestower of Perfections) is the glorious culmination. This is the state of Yoga, union. The individual soul (Shakti) has reached the crown and merged with Supreme Consciousness (Shiva). In this non dual state, all siddhis (perfections) are naturally attained.

The true Asura slayed is our ignorance of our own divinity. The true goddess crowned is the consciousness that awakens within.
