Autism is weird. I can make eye contact and somehow pick up on all your hidden feelings and unspoken tensions, but I still can’t figure out why everyone’s laughing when I simply stated a fact.
The worst part of late diagnosis isn't "I wish I'd known sooner." It's "I told people I was struggling and they didn't believe me." You weren't missed. You were dismissed.
my therapist told me, "stop assuming people are mad at you. Stop attempting to read people's minds. stop trying to manage the thoughts and emotions of others. let people be in charge of themselves. if they have something to say to you they will and if they don't it is their responsibility not yours. overthinking kills happiness" and that hit me like a brick.
My therapist said:
If you self isolate when you feel overwhelmed, you probably had to solve a lot of your problems alone as a child.
I felt that deeply.
my therapist told me this and it hit me: “healing is so hard because it is a constant battle between your inner child who is scared and just wants safety.... your inner teenager who is angry and just wants justice.... and your current self-who is tired and just wants peace."
I wish people understood that when someone seems to overexplain, it’s often because of how much they’ve been misunderstood. They’re trying to give you information that they assume is hard to understand based on how they’ve been treated. This deserves compassion, not criticism.
I will never judge a person who breaks down in tears over something small. Because I know very well that they are not crying for that reason, but for everything they have been holding inside until that moment
The autistic urge to plan an entire argument in your head, because you’re certain that one is going to happen and you don’t want to be caught unawares and for that person to get one over on you because of your delayed processing.
I love when people tell autistic people “you gotta advocate for yourself” but when I do that I’m seen as aggressive (even when I’m not being aggressive) and or argumentative or just plain rude. It’s nearly impossible for autistics to advocate for themselves
