The #USMNT plays the Group B 3rd-place team (B&H) in 329 of 330 permutations in which the Group B 3rd-place team advances.

The exception is if 3rd-place teams from A, C, D & F do *not* advance. That's extremely unlikely w/ 3rd-place teams in 3 of those groups already on 3 pts.

This is pretty crazy. The Algeria vs. Austria game is in the very last time slot (along with Argentina vs. Jordan) so both teams will know exactly what they need to go through.

There’s a likely scenario where both of them will have already guaranteed qualification. In that case, it would actually be beneficial to LOSE this game.

Second place in the group will likely face Spain, while third place in the group will get a much easier matchup such as Egypt or USA.

The best part about this is that these two nations have a history of stuff like this. In 1982, Austria and West Germany colluded so that both would advance to the knockouts. That result eliminated Algeria.

I can’t wait for this game.

Unwritten rule: When a superstar athlete finds himself on a team from Minnesota, the national media will take it upon themselves to attempt to do whatever possible to get that athlete onto one of the 7-8 teams in that particular sport that they actually care about.
