Decentralized Identity (DID)
The problem with your identity today — Right now, your identity online is fragmented and rented. Google owns your Google login. Meta owns your Facebook profile. Twitter/X owns your handle. Every account is a permission slip from a corporation that can revoke it at any time. Web4 ends this.
What is a DID? A Decentralized Identifier is a globally unique identifier that you control — not a company. It looks like this: did:web4:z6MkhaXgBZDvotDkL5257.... It's stored on a blockchain or distributed ledger, cryptographically tied to your private keys. No one can delete it, suspend it, or shadow-ban it.
The DID ecosystem has three layers:
Identifier — Your DID, stored on-chain. Think of it as your universal Web4 username.
Verifiable Credentials (VCs) — Digital certificates issued to your DID. Your university can issue a VC saying you graduated. Your government can issue a VC for your age. You share only what you need — no oversharing.
DID Document — A public record that maps your DID to your public keys, service endpoints, and authentication methods.
Zero-Knowledge Identity — The most exciting Web4 development: ZK-proof-based identity. You can prove you're over 18 without revealing your birthday. You can prove you're a verified human without revealing your name. The verifier learns only what they need — nothing more.
Real-world traction — Microsoft's ION, Spruce ID, Polygon ID, and the W3C DID standard are already building this infrastructure. Web4 will make DID the default login method across the decentralized web.
