@RutgersAltRoute A5: The keyword for discipline is equity, not equality. It is not fair to expect #Sped students to behave the same way as GenEd students. We need to create environments that won't trigger them, such as lessening overwhelming sensory stimulants #AltRtEd#Sped
@RutgersAltRoute A4: I try to switch up what we are doing every 10 minutes or so. I start with SEL & movement, then quick review & new vocab, followed by a video, and I end with drawing & writing. This helps keep students engaged & addresses different learning modes #AltRtEd#Sped
@RutgersAltRoute A3: I'm looking forward to being back 100% in the classroom, because there are too many distractions for these students at home. In school, these students can use balancing stools, sensory strips on their desks, etc. #AltRtEd#Sped
@RutgersAltRoute A2: I encourage all of my students to tell me if they are having an issue with anything, no matter how big or small. It's important that they understand they have a voice & not to be afraid to use it. #AltRtEd#Sped
@RutgersAltRoute A1: As an ESL teacher, I feel that ELLs often don't get the evaluations or services they need because their needs are dismissed as "language learning issues." #AltRtEd#Sped
@Rdene915 @knipe_lindsey @RutgersAltRoute I agree! Teachers can also learn from each other, and this year that has been hard with being remote. I got some great ideas today to use in my classroom! #AltRtEd#growthmindset
@RutgersAltRoute A4: Feedback needs to be constructive & actionable. I like the "compliment sandwich" feedback model. Start with praise, give areas of improvement & end with praise. I find students are more receptive & react more positively. #AltRtEd#growthmindset
@RutgersAltRoute A3- I try to begin each lesson with WHY we are learning these concepts or tasks. First we learn THIS so next we can take what we know & learn THAT & grow as learners. #AltRtEd#growthmindset
@alberti_mr@RutgersAltRoute Scaffolding is so important in our classrooms. Not every child learns the same way & we need to meet them where they are. If 1 child can write 1 complete sentence, I ask them to write 2. If another is starting to ID letters, I ask them if its upper/lowercase.
@RutgersAltRoute A2-I always try to instill in my students that it's ok if they don't know an answer or get it wrong. Mistakes are how they learn and grow. I have high expectations, but I never make them feel inferior for getting an answer wrong. #AltRtEd#growthmindset
@alberti_mr @MadisonCydis @RutgersAltRoute I experienced this when I was a kid learning math. In the dark ages, we were taught girls were "good at" reading & boys were "good at math". I struggled with it & decided there was no way for me to learn it so why even bother?
@RutgersAltRoute A1- I work with K&1st graders & I often hear them say "I can't do it" when faced with a challenge. This is an opportunity for me to instill a growth mindset in them. Just bc they can't do it YET doesn't mean they can't learn it. #AltRtEd#growthmindset
@JaymieMurray15@RutgersAltRoute Self advocacy is so important in life and Iโve noticed my high school students have a really hard time with this, not just with bullying but for extra help too. Itโs beneficial to keep encouraging them to ask for help if they need it!
@RutgersAltRoute A3. At the beginning of the school year, I sent out a welcome letter and a syllabus to all families for whom I had email addresses that indicated expectations/ curriculum. In addition, I called each family to check-in regarding virtual learning expectations. #AltRtEd
@RutgersAltRoute A3: I try to keep an open line of communication between my students, their families, and my colleagues at school. When issues come up in my classroom I speak with the parents to try to problem solve. I also loop in my grade level Dean when the problem is serious enough.
