@watcher_prime@romainrevert For sure! Back in the day these bots could take 24 hrs or longer to render, so hiding stuff would help speed that up. Efficiency was key back then.
@watcher_prime@romainrevert I'd hide geom per shot, our pipeline was really nice that way. Basically look through the camera, select the geom through all the frames, invert the selection and hide. I'd also hide by size, because the modelers made all the nuts and bolts that may be smaller than a pixel.
@watcher_prime@romainrevert The film models were massive, but we also cheated a ton, and got really good at it. I personally would hide any geo that wasn't visible to the camera, saved a bunch of render time.
@watchmeanimate So sad this never came to fruition, a Heresey game would have been awesome. I'd imagine Prospero would have been a massive undertaking.
@popupipapo I love the idea of doing a series of these. Folks generally have no idea what they're looking at when it's well done. It's rare to have an Ironman shot that isn't CG, but the studio loves to show off the practical suits. Problem with them is the limited movement, hence the CG.
@RedefineFX Super nice. You might be able to get more of that mushroom curling with the vorticity parameter. It's a very fine line to get just the right amount. Great work!
@Crumpets4All@Spielberg2K It was a combo of both. I think 3 plates were shot on location, and 2 bluescreen plates for the closeups. A 360 camera rig was used to capture what we see outside of the windows during the bluescreen. Our awesome matchmove team gave me the info needed to track it all together.
@Itshittingmenow@Spielberg2K Gotcha, ya sometimes they film in slightly different locations on different days. What you see through the car windows is filmed along the highway with a 360 camera rig, so hopefully that felt right.
@JohnCos99944736@Spielberg2K Lots of tracking and compositing, had to write a little plugin for the transitions from plate to bluescreen. Lots of paintwork for the the stitched background we see on the interior portion. CG windows and mirrors. Head replacements. Spinning tires. Amazing group working on this.
