“Behind this statistic are stories of heartbreak. Because these are people. Mums, dads, brothers, sisters, grandparents - their deaths shattering the lives of families and friends.”

@RCollEM@VP_Scot_RCEM Winter is coming. We need to see active improvements. Reduce hospital occupancy, improve flow, improve staffing of EDs, improve safety. These deaths are all avoidable.
So vital that we #resuscitateEM now. We are at crisis point. We need government action now to improve corridor waits, improve staffing and improve morale.
We are hosting our Future of Emergency Care in Scotland event today near Holyrood in Edinburgh.
RCEM Vice President for Scotland Dr Fiona Hunter hopes politicians in attendance listen to the key asks in our newly launched 2026 Manifesto.
#ResuscitateEmergencyCare
This is damning and worrying data. We know the outcomes for those that wait longer. These are our parents and grandparents. The harm this causes to patients and the moral injury to staff is awful. It has to stop.
More than 51,400 people aged 60 and over endured waits of 12 hours or more in Scotland’s Emergency Departments last year – new analysis from RCEM reveals.
That’s 14,407 more patients than the year before (2023).
And is over 16 times more people than in 2019 when just 3,135 older people faced waits of this length.

@online_his released their review on EM in GGC. It is a wide reaching document with many recommendations for GGC but also 11 national recommendations. Much of it is applicable across all EDs in Scotland and the UK. National change is needed. https://t.co/zBbcEvNXOx
Of people who required non-immediate care in an A&E department in England between 21 March 2021 and 30 April 2022, and did not die during their A&E attendance, 1.3% died within 30 days of returning home or be admitted to inpatient care.

@ONS ‼️ This is really important. The ONS looked at this and found that long stays in EDs are associated with additional deaths. Did we know this before? Yes, but here's why this adds.
We have seen other studies suggesting this but new data published by @ONS confirms the relationship between ED length of stay and mortality. This needs to be urgently addressed.
“There must be a point where we go beyond analysis and accept that this is a serious problem that needs urgent political action” - @RCEMpresident Dr Adrian Boyle.
New @ONS research concludes that patients who wait in A&E for more than two hours are exposed to an increasing risk of death.

Only 50 days until #SchoolFeeVAT is introduced and this new data, adds to a bleak picture.
The impact of #SchoolFeeVAT on state schools and children's education is undeniable, it's clear that the Govt has got it's projections very wrong.
Here's what we know:
⬇️ISC reported: A 1.7% drop in ind. school student numbers in Sept, including a 4.6% decline in Year 7 —around 10,500 fewer students on roll vs 2023.
⬇️In-year transfer applications: 200 LAs have reported 3,000 in-year transfer applications, with 85 LAs still to respond, suggesting around 5,000 applicants.
⬇️ISC report that 2,550 students have served notice to leave 900 independent schools in Jan, with the total across all 2,600 schools likely even higher.
This is just the tip of the iceberg as it should come as no surprise that: Parents will protect their children’s education, they will strain every sinew to avoid in-year transfers, which educators recommend avoiding, especially during GCSE/A-level years. Parents will wait for the right "jump-off point" for an unfunded state school place.
The Govt should expect medium-term displacement to be far greater than their projected 3000 in 2024/5 and longer term 35,000
The full impact won’t be clear for a few years, but by then, much damage will have already been done to children, state schools and our world leading independent school sector. Parents will seek a formal review of this pernicious tax and the Govt must be held to account each year.
There is time to #FindABetterWay and @UKLabour should scrap #SchoolFeeVAT #EducationNotTax
@Kevin_Fong Extraordinarily powerful Kevin. You put what we experienced front and centre. I had tears in my eyes listening. Thank you from a fellow NHS consutlant
