On May 5th, I received my doctoral hood from the University of South Carolina and took one step closer to finishing my journey through PT school. Now only one clinical in Arizona and a licensure exam remain until my goal becomes reality
(Almost) Dr. Jaylen Hiller, DPT
To be honest, it feels like NCHSAA is handing out participation trophies. There were a lot of teams making the playoffs that had no business being in anyone’s playoff bracket
This season, North Carolina will have
8 boys public school state champions
8 girls public school state champions
4 boys private school state champions
4 girls private school state champions
24 total high school basketball state champions 👀
Does any other state have this many?
Some will slip through the cracks, but I guarantee you’d see more quality coaching if these 2 requirements were enforced
Certification sets the BARE minimum standard, which means fewer coaches that are all noise with no substance at all levels
Every youth sport in the US would benefit from 2 requirements to coach / train :
1) A certification process to coach at every grade level (elementary, middle, and HS)
2) Taking very BASIC Exercise Physiology course
The ExPhys course to ensure coaches have a solid understanding of energy system principles & specificity
Training the wrong energy system only makes you perform worse
For example: making a sprinter do 200m repeats with only 30s rest isn’t just tiring. It makes them slower
Being weak / uncoordinated at a young age sets them up for more struggle to catch up in high school. What they need aren’t more sport practices or extra skills training. They need to get stronger.
Youth sports Parents:
prioritizing short-term athletic success vs long term physical development at a young age will only set them back more as they get older
Your child looks like an All-American dominating at 10 y/o but folds like a lawn chair when they do a squat or lunge
They’re winning 11U tournament MVPs but can’t do 10 full-range pushups
They’re getting “exposure” but look like they’re stuck in mud when they sprint
All this CC / Angel Reese fallout about a play that frequently happens in the NBA is exhausting
In the NBA, it’s a hard foul
In the WNBA, it’s a week-long discussion on racial disparities
Treat them like basketball players, not archenemies for a headline. Let it go
Being around them often, I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a kid between 10-18 years old with a short cut lol. Everyone got dreads, twists, fros, and braids
