Charlize Theron initially hesitated about The Devil's Advocate (1997) because it involved explicit scenes, having previously turned down Showgirls for that reason. But after thinking it over, she decided to accept because she loved the character. Landing the role, however, proved surprisingly difficult.
“I was auditioning for a lot of stuff where they thought I was too pretty,” she recalled. “Devil’s Advocate was probably the hardest. They put me through the wringer.”
Director Taylor Hackford still wasn’t convinced. “He was like, ‘If you were his wife, why would he cheat on you?’ And I was like, ‘What does that even mean?’”
After repeatedly pushing her in auditions, including three additional screen tests with different emotional scenes, Hackford finally cast her as Mary Ann.

Few films capture cosmic wonder with this much restraint and awe. God, this movie is so good.
