3 Things I discovered about life while learning to saw lumber.

(And why hobbies are so important)

3. Making a Mistake isn't the end of the world

When you're first learning to saw. The hardest logs to saw are ones shaped like a banana. The curve makes it incredibly difficult to get usable boards out of. Using specific cuts you can try to get the most out of the log possible.

When cutting my first log shaped like this, I took WAY to much off on my first passes. I didn't understand how much the shape of the log affected the amount of turns you needed to bring either side to where you needed it to be.

Effectively I only got one or two boards out of the log.

Luckily there are always more logs to saw.

When you're learning you have to make mistakes like these. Working through difficult situations in the unknown has a lot of failure involved. Without making these mistakes, we can't learn what to do in the future on more important things in life.

Make the cut, learn from your mistakes and try another method next time.

2. You never know the tension of a situation until you are in it.

Logs, especially deciduous trees that grow towards light, have tension. This tension can absolutely ruin your day. If a tree grow on an angle, there is more tension to hold the weight on one side than another.

When sawing it is difficult to know how this tension is going to affect your cut. The only solution is to make cuts and then adjust as you see the tension express itself.

When we are in situations in life, sometimes its hard to predict what is going to happen. We can sit and figure for hours but until it happens, it's hard to predict.

The more we expose ourselves to solutions while in tough spots, the quicker we can react to a change in a circumstance. On the flip side, it is important to learn how to relieve a tense situation the correct way to resolve it.

1. When pursuing a goal some things take time and results aren't guaranteed.

I won't see any usable material from my work this morning for 4-6 months. Stickering, drying, rotating, checking humidity. All processes that have to go on for months so that the boards don't warp, bend or crack. Even with all this preparation, some of them may end up unusable.

In a way the pursuit of our goals is like this. Some goals are short term, but long term goals take patience and time. Even with every calculation made, and hard work put in, we may still fail at achieving them. With life, we almost always have a second chance. Trying over and over until we succeed will be rewarded with a good outcome.

Picking up a hobby is a perfect way to find rest and relaxation.

Wait, isn't sawing hard work? Totally .

But I find sawing to be one of the best ways for me to relax. Just me, the saw and some beautiful wood that will become something one day.

I highly encourage you to learn something that takes you away from the busyness of your everyday tasks.
