One of the most interesting events of the Renaissance began today in 1418!

The competition to decide who would design and build the Dome of the Duomo in Florence.

The rivals, Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti, were ultimately both chosen to work together on it.

Drama and disagreement ensued, and only after Brunelleschi faked an illness and refused to work, was it realized how indispensable he was.

Ghiberti was removed from the project and Filippo Brunelleschi produced one of the most incredible Domes on earth!

Greece has been ranked No. 1 in the world for culture and heritage, placing ahead of Italy, Spain, France and Türkiye in a global ranking published by Visual Capitalist and based on the 2024 U.S. News & World Report survey. The result puts Greece at the top of a list that includes some of the world’s most historically influential and culturally renowned nations.

The ranking is particularly significant because Greece’s cultural influence extends far beyond its modern borders. Ancient Greek civilization shaped major areas of Western thought, including philosophy, politics, architecture, science, literature and the arts. Athens remains one of the world’s most recognizable historic cities, with the Acropolis and Parthenon standing as enduring symbols of ancient Greece and its influence on civilization.

Greece’s heritage, however, is not limited to Classical antiquity. The country’s history stretches across thousands of years, encompassing the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations, the Classical period, the Hellenistic world, the Roman era, the Byzantine Empire and the modern Greek state. Across the mainland and islands, archaeological sites, monasteries, churches, castles, traditional settlements and museums preserve layers of this history.

The country’s cultural identity is also reflected in its living traditions. Greek cuisine, music, dance, festivals, architecture and local customs remain an important part of everyday life, while different regions have developed distinctive traditions shaped by their own histories and geography.

According to Visual Capitalist, the ranking was derived from a global survey conducted between March 22 and May 23, 2024, involving around 17,000 respondents. Participants evaluated countries according to five heritage-related attributes: cultural accessibility, historical significance, food, cultural attractions and geographic appeal.

This methodology is important because the ranking measures international perception rather than an objective measurement of cultural value. In other words, Greece’s first-place position reflects how strongly people around the world associate the country with history, culture, attractions, food and distinctive landscapes.

Greece’s combination of ancient monuments and archaeological sites with its Mediterranean environment appears to have played an important role in its position. Visitors can move from ancient temples and archaeological museums to Byzantine churches, mountain villages, island settlements and coastal landscapes within the same country.

The result also places Greece ahead of Italy, which ranks second, followed by Spain, France and Türkiye. Mexico, Egypt, Thailand, Portugal and India complete the top 10, demonstrating the enormous diversity of countries regarded internationally as cultural and historical destinations.

For Greece, the No. 1 position highlights something that has remained central to the country's global image for centuries: its ability to connect the modern world with an exceptionally long historical narrative. From the temples of Athens to ancient cities, Byzantine monuments, traditional villages and island communities, Greece continues to present a cultural landscape in which the past remains visibly connected to the present.

The ranking therefore does not simply place Greece first among tourist destinations. It reflects the continued global recognition of Greece as a country whose history, cultural traditions, architecture, cuisine and landscapes have had an influence far beyond its borders.

On this day in 717 the Umayyad Caliphate threw its full might against the walls of Constantinople in a siege meant to end the Byzantine Empire and open the road into Europe, and, astonishingly, on the very same day one year later, that siege collapsed in total failure. The Arab conquests had swept across the Middle East and North Africa, and now the caliphate aimed at the ultimate prize, the Christian capital guarding the gateway between continents. A vast army under the caliph's brother, Maslama, and an enormous fleet moved to surround the city by land and sea.

Standing against them was a newly risen emperor, Leo III, a canny soldier who had actually tricked the Arabs during his own climb to the throne. Behind the tremendous triple walls of Constantinople, the strongest fortifications in the world, Leo prepared to hold. His greatest weapon was the empire's terrifying secret: Greek fire, a liquid flame that could be sprayed across the water and could not be put out. When the Arab fleet closed in, Byzantine ships armed with it burned the enemy navy on the sea.

Then the siege became a war of attrition, and everything went wrong for the attackers. A brutal, freezing winter set in for which the Arab army was unprepared, and men and animals died in droves. Famine and disease swept the huge camp. The Bulgars, the fierce people to the north, allied with the Byzantines and fell on the Arab rear, killing thousands more. Supply fleets sent to relieve the besiegers were burned or defected.

On 15 August 718, exactly a year after it began, the shattered remnant of the great expedition gave up and withdrew, and even then storms and Byzantine attacks tore at the retreating fleet until barely a handful of ships made it home. It was one of the most important battles in European history. Had Constantinople fallen in 718, there would have been little to stop the caliphate from pushing into a divided, vulnerable Europe. Instead the Byzantine bastion held, and it would go on guarding the continent's eastern door for another seven hundred years.

Dear Muslims: My family and I have decided to move from the US to a Muslim country. We haven't picked which one yet—we're still comparing which one offers the best benefits package.

All my neighbors want to come too. And my neighbors' neighbors. And all their friends. And their friends' friends. Millions of us will show up with suitcases and a sense of entitlement.

As a large Christian community, we'll need a few small changes: Please start building churches immediately. Real churches, with nice loud bells, the kind that can be heard from the town square.

We'll also need for everyone to celebrate Christmas, and to close certain streets once a year for our processions. We may want to gather to pray to our Almighty God on your streets, in your parks, or on the lawns of your mosques.

We'll be an oppressed minority, so you'll have to be understanding and adapt to our way of life. Every supermarket must stock real pork, ham, chorizo, and bacon. And we're bringing all our dogs, so you'll need dog parks, and you'll have to smile tolerate them we walk them in front of your mosques. We want our women to be able to safely go out alone and wear shorts and tank tops. And when the weather's nice, we men like to go shirtless. We also want to drink alcohol, dance, and place an occasional bet at the horse races.

While we're at it, your religious holidays are a bit too much; they could offend the Christian community, so we'd appreciate it if you'd discreetly eliminate them. Thanks.

In schools and workplaces, our children and employees must be able to wear large crucifixes, say prayers, eat ham sandwiches in the cafeteria, and learn Christian principles without anyone getting criticized. We also demand chapels or Christian prayer rooms in every building, plus translators, because we have no intention of learning Arabic.

If any of this is rejected, please send a list of police station addresses so we can report you for discrimination, Christianophobia, racism, and anything we don't like.

One more thing: if my kids protest or burn your flag for any reason, please be understanding. I'll be sure to give them a very serious scolding.

Finally, we all want generous benefits, free housing, phones, free food, and pocket money while we "integrate" over the next three generations. Working is optional, obviously. Be patient with us, you'll get used to it.
