Sexual partners need assessment and appropriate treatment. Avoid sex until the recommended waiting period has passed and partners have been treated.

Gonorrhoea is curable with the right antibiotics. Drug resistance is a growing concern, so avoid self-medication and seek professional care.

Testing matters. A urine sample or swab may be needed. You cannot reliably diagnose or exclude gonorrhoea by symptoms alone.

Untreated gonorrhoea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and, rarely, infection spreading to the blood or joints.

It can infect the genitals, throat and rectum. Oral sex can also transmit the infection.

Symptoms may include burning when urinating, unusual genital discharge, pelvic pain or testicular pain. Some people have NO symptoms.

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is treatable, but untreated infection can cause serious complications.

FACT: Breast cancer can occur in younger women, although risk generally increases with age.
