He named her not a fugitive but a political prisoner, not a criminal but a woman hunted for struggling to live a liberated life. And while we chanted “Hands off Assata,” it was Cuba that made certain that the United States could not touch her.

In her autobiography, Assata wrote, “Only a fool lets somebody else tell him who his enemy is.” I echo that sentiment by saying never let your enemies define who your heroes are.

Assata Olugbala Shakur is now an ancestor, but her spirit will live in her past actions, writings, and also what we do moving forward with her legacy of fighting for liberation.
