1/8 Today in Philly, I went to the City Council meeting to oppose the 76ers Arena project and was beyond disappointed by the treatment that many citizens and I received. A thread about what happened 🧵

7/8 I eventually found seating for our seniors while we waited. After this goose chase, I left feeling deceived & disappointed, especially for the group of seniors who wanted an opportunity to participate in the civic process for a decision that directly impacts them.

6/8 We were then told to head to the overflow room on the 5th floor. My group and I headed upstairs only to find out there was also no space there. We then were instructed to head back to the 4th floor where security would not allow us back in the secure area around the Chambers.

5/8 Right after the guard said no to me, an arena supporter came and tried to get in. After a quick conversation, that individual was allowed into the room despite there being “no space.”

4/8 Things were smooth sailing until 4th floor security prohibited us from entering City Council Chambers. Supposedly, there was no space for our group, despite my urges to find them seats so they could rest after all the standing and walking (see bottom right corner of photo)

3/8 Today, I went to City Council to show out. As someone born in the U.S. who speaks fluent Canto and Mandarin, I guided a group of passionate Chinese seniors who didn’t speak any English with the intent to translate the City Council meeting.

2/8 Since moving to Philly 3 months ago, I’ve learned about the 76ers arena project proposed in Chinatown. The proposed location needs some lovin’ but a basketball arena is not the right fit. Disruption to a historic cultural neighborhood, env & health impacts, you name it.

So exciting to see these investments pop up across the country! Solar PV in Montana and North Carolina and EV charging in Ohio - this list goes on.
