@america “Country” is in fact a geographic term whose origins are French meaning “district” or “region”.
A “nation” is its people. And the U.S. is famously not a single “nation”, but one nation made of many.
@JoshuaLWatson @sam_hudson5@Make_it_Raines Apocalypses are normally so vision-laden in ancient Jewish texts, and Paul names one here, it’s hard for me not to think of Jesus visually appearing to him. But I agree the “en emoi” is unclear and confusing.
@Make_it_Raines @JoshuaLWatson I think Josh is maybe suggesting that he didn’t and that Acts is wrong about that. I read Acts as historical though.
Am I right, Josh?
@JoshuaLWatson I think though that his earlier mention of opposing the ekklesia in vs. 13 along with 15-16 suggests that he opposed the Jesus movement in some way
@JoshuaLWatson Kind of. Maybe. He seems to suggest some kind of a change in Gal. 1:15-16. But I guess given that passage he also could have been a Christ follower before, and the change he refers to is his conviction to preach Christ to the nations.
@brookins_tim I think Martyn’s, but I don’t think most important means “right”. His might be the most important because it’s so idiosyncratic and bc of its afterlife
@Make_it_Raines Richard Bauckham has a chapter (or two) on named and unnamed persons in the Gospels: Cleopas, his unnamed companion, the naked youth in Mark if I remember correctly, and others. Can’t remember if he mentions the rich young ruler
Is contemporary philosophy to classics what theology is to biblical studies? Do classicists get annoyed when modern philosophers use ancient texts to answer contemporary questions? Are they more critical in their use of them?
Thoughts I’m thinking tonight
Any cool New Testament or research-related things I should do? Already planning to visit Pompeii and Rome. Any other libraries, archaeological sites etc. I should try to visit? Or things I should try to do?
Fellow New Testament/ancient world nerds, I’m spending the next 10 months in Europe with the US Army. Will unfortunately miss SBL because of this, ended up not submitting any abstracts bc of it, but trying to take advantage of my time over there and can travel.
