It’s SO hard for me to put into words how Ryusuke Hamaguchi does it. Asako I & II (2018) shouldn’t work. A half-hearted Shunji Iwaiesque contrivance retooled as boring and softspoken, drained of all sap and melodramatic miasma, that SOMEfuckinghow shoots ya in the goddamn head.
Sat here for an hour and a half waiting for the other shoe, twiddling my thumbs, looking at the time, occasionally nodding at a nice shot or six, kinda wondering where the fission was hiding, and then the shoe vaporized me from orbit and I wished this thing was five hours long.
Recently, I wrote a review of Yoshiyuki Okuyama’s film “5 Centimeters Per Second,” a live-action reimagining of the acclaimed Makoto Shinkai anime film of the same name.
Both the remake and original anime are being screened at @NipponFilmfest.
