The answer to the 2014 vs 2023 debate is very simple..

• The 2014 group did more with less. They made a World Cup round of 16, made a Copa America semi-final.. with Brad Davis and Gyasi Zardes starting on the wing.. go back to 2009 and it gets even heavier in favor of the old guard with the run to a confederations cup final and beating prime Spain. The Couva disaster was the result of having no one to push out that group when Father Time was calling. The lost generation was real and is why our team is so young now

• This group, as much as I believe they’re out most talented ever, hasn’t done anything to surpass expectations. They’ve not done anything they weren’t supposed to do.. 3rd in World Cup qualifying, couple Nations Leagues, a World Cup round of 16.. nothing to surprise anyone or anything close to unprecedented in terms of results

I’m in the camp that a better manager would’ve gotten this team to a World Cup quarterfinal, but the reality is the older teams always punched above their weight, the current USMNT has not don’t that yet.

We can debate why that is, but for me the Dempsey / Donovan / Altidore / Bradley / Howard generation did more with less and wouldn’t bow down to prime Spain, much less a 2023 USMNT that has a manager that acts like we “changed the way the world views American soccer” by making a World Cup round of 16. We used to expect more when we came together as a national team and we played like it 🤷‍♂️
