Many times, as surgeons we dream of a world where we walk into theatre, find the patient ready and start cutting. That’s in a parallel universe 😂😂

In reality, sometimes we sit and wait and wait for things to get ready while nodding our heads to things like: “Dr, just give us 10 minutes and everything will be ready…Dr, the instruments are still sterilizing…..Dr the patient has refused to consent….Dr we don’t have size 6.5 gloves blah blah

And before you know it, it’s 2 hours and you haven’t started working on the first patient.

But again, the thought of life in a parallel universe motivates us to come early to theatre either way😂😂😂

I learned the hard way when I ignored one of the greatest principles of medicine-looking at a patient as a whole!

So, the previous Friday I got to see one elderly lady who had poor vision, diagnosed cataract and booked her for surgery on Tuesday (my elective theater days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays). I only looked at her eyes.

On Monday as is my routine, I called in each of the patients on my theatre list to reassess them. So, when this particular patient came in, I noticed she had a hunchback.

My small head suddenly started going in circles with questions: “Why didn’t I see this on Friday? How is she going to lie on the operating table? Should I refer her to some other senior doctor? But she has already waited for surgery the whole weekend. How am I even going to start changing my mind about the surgery? What will I tell her?”

I wanted to ask her if she could lie on her back, but what kind of silly question would that be for someone with a hunch back?

Fast forward, I took her to the ward and let her try lying on her back and timed how long she could hold with her head in that position. I also assessed her breathing while lying on her back…pheeewww all was well.

In theater, I had to work really fast while continuously talking to her just to be sure she was still comfortable. I’m glad the surgery went successfully and above all, I’m glad she’s seeing well again.

Lesson to Gladys: Always look at the patient as a whole. You’re not just an eye doctor but a doctor.

11. He prioritized agriculture by distributing over 400 tractors, 239 tillers, 710 motor pumps, and 714 motorcycles to boost production and support rural stakeholders.

12. He provided access to improved seeds and other farm inputs to maximize agricultural output.

13. Tomato production in Burkina Faso increased from 315,000 metric tonnes in 2022 to 360,000 metric tonnes in 2024.

14. Millet production rose from 907,000 metric tonnes in 2022 to 1.1 million metric tonnes in 2024.

15. Rice production increased from 280,000 metric tonnes in 2022 to 326,000 metric tonnes in 2024.

16. He banned French military operations in Burkina Faso.

17. He banned French media in Burkina Faso.

18. He expelled French troops from Burkina Faso.

19. His government is constructing new roads, widening existing ones, and upgrading gravel roads to paved surfaces.

20. He is building a new airport, the Ouagadougou-Donsin Airport, which is expected to be completed in 2025.
