@planetclarke Anyway, thank you. I appreciate the re-focus on the web of life and that we can participate in this web of life in ways that don't need to come at grotesque moral costs.
@planetclarke There is also something deeply disturbing about contemplating all the harm that happens to animals, whether for food or for testing or whatever it is. It's a legitimate moral catastrophe and I don't know how to do anything about it aside from personal consumption choices :(
I understand @RealMichaelKay 's take on the alternate jerseys. Doesn't line up with his lack of concern about the Starr patch tho. If it's OK for ownership to get 20 mill by messing with the purity of the uniform, it's OK for players to ask for alternates they think are cool.
@QueenMab87 It just makes me worry that people can't grasp that the real problem here is American militarism, capitalism, etc. and elevating Israel as the driver misses the point at best, but at worst creates awful breathing room for gross anti Jewish rhetoric.
@QueenMab87 Some thoughtful folks who were advocating for it said that Israel is "special" due to American aid and the "special relationship." Fair enough. But my worry is yours, I think. +
@JeffreyASachs@DavidAstinWalsh And that "no thanks" serves as the basis for so much rhetoric around Israel too. Jews with power, doing horrible things, is not merely another example of state power, it's a "proof" that they (antisemites) were right all along!
@JeffreyASachs@DavidAstinWalsh It can be weaponized and enhanced by material conditions. But that's secondary to the fact that, existentially, a lot of Christian and Muslim culture simply can't tolerate the fact that Jews still endure, having said "no thanks."
@thecindynoir Like, it's not "boys need something else" but rather boys are mansplaining at age 7 and learn how to mess up a class early on enough that by high school, my female colleagues consistently report less respect from the boys (especially when they have a male student teacher!)
@thecindynoir Yes! I worry that (sometimes) boys' lack of engagement is understood as a systemic, anti-boy structure in elementary ed. I wonder if it isn't more of an underestimation of parents' willingness to teach boys listening skills, attentiveness, sharing, collaboration, etc.
@memeticsisyphus There is also an equally general "they" who did way, way worse to Barak and Michelle Obama. I'd be grateful if we could stop playing these games. It's not helpful. What do you want to build, together?
@bidetmarxman Teachable moment. Can you explain in simple terms to folks sympathetic to your takes (like me) why Derek's take is "soul sucking" and what the alternative take should be?
@memeticsisyphus Bad take. Making fun of disabled people is, in fact, deplorable. If a lot of his supporters don't think it is and get their feelings hurt when called out on it, that's on them. Plus, low key, she said *half* of his supporters, so that's not half of America by any stretch.
@_iamjamila So I always find it strange (maybe not?) that people have to, just have to make sure that any attempt to call folks in has to be met with conditions around "well, not really, am I right?" Just try to listen, be gentle, and understand that Jews face intense hatred.
@_iamjamila And yes, some Jews pass as white, but that's not material to the fact that people are always suspicious of other people being Jews, and there is a worldwide, conspiracist mindset around who is Jewish. From America to Indonesia to Argentina.
