At #InfoSec2025 @ISACAKampala, our 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿, @ayebmartin, urged Ugandan SMEs to go beyond simply adopting AI to own the change with responsibility and confidence.

𝗔 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼��𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲:

• 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘂𝘀𝗲.
→ Protect customer and employee privacy by defining who can access what information. This builds trust and prevents costly missteps.

• 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗜 𝘂𝗽𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴.
→ Equip your team with tools like digital accounting and AI-driven operations to save time, serve customers better, and drive innovation.

• 𝗔𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀.
→ Change is constant. Businesses that can quickly adjust sales, stock, or communication processes stay agile and seize new opportunities faster.

→ Designate who manages AI systems and data safety. Clear responsibility prevents small errors from becoming big problems.

💡 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: AI will reshape daily operations, freeing up 60–70% of employee time.

African SMEs that adopt AI ethically and build strong human skills will thrive: earning customer trust, cutting costs, and growing sustainably.

→ When using AI systems such as chatbots or recommendation tools, let your customers know. Transparency builds confidence and trust.

- 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀'.
→ Avoid feeding sensitive information into public AI platforms. Use secure, internal systems or anonymized data for analysis.

- 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆.
→ Schedule periodic checks to ensure AI outputs remain fair, accurate, and aligned with your company’s values.

- 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲.
→ Equip teams with basic AI literacy and ethical-use training. A responsible culture starts with informed employees.
