Trouble does not always produce prayer. Sometimes it produces silence, and that kind of silence is not holy. There is a difference between suffering, which can still turn toward God, and the kind of affliction which grinds down the capacity to attend to anything at all. Prayer, at its basic core, is made of attention. Remove attention and you have a person who wants to pray and cannot, and that person is not faithless. Any pastor worth their salt, who has sat with the truly crushed, has watched it happen. We need to be circumspect and stop promising the people in our care that pain reliably deepens them, because sometimes it flattens them, and the flock of God needs us to know that.
