I gave @AnthropicAI's new Fable 5 my hardest challenge: explain the Riemann Hypothesis — math's most famous unsolved problem — to anyone. Two prompts later: a full interactive site + this video, scored with music composed from the zeta zeros themselves 🤯🎵 https://t.co/OfX7I1IVCZ
Humans have deep-rooted desires for status.
These are best accommodated in diversified small human communities, where everyone can be the expert at their thing.
Social media makes us unhappy, because our community becomes the world, and to a first approximation, we are all peasants.
We are uglier than the people on Instagram, our families are doing worse than the families on Facebook, on Twitter we are nobody.
So we use the weapons of the weak, we ridicule those with power and try to tear down their reputations, we participate in cathartic expressions of moral superiority. But it is a weak balm for the psychological pain of being low status in a human community.
Pope Leo XIV on AI:
“Artificial intelligence needs to be disarmed. The word [disarmed] is strong I know, but deliberately chosen because this moment needs words capable of attracting attention, awakening consciences, and indicating paths forward for humanity.”
Xiaohong Chen (Yale) presented “Neural Networks for Economics: Theory & Inference”. Long before today’s AI boom, econometricians (Chen, White, and others) built foundations for neural nets as sieves. These tools are now crucial for NN-based estimation and inference in economics.
This is very misguided: economists in industry and politics might be more influential - good for them - but their’s a different job. A PhD is designed to produce academic economists - and academics economists need to be able to acquire a bag of tricks to produce valuable research - math etc is the way they show they will be able to acquire the whole bag . Also - while necessary math is not enough, we (admission officers) read the research they produce and try and predict their creativity … this is wildly hard and hence we don’t trust much ourselves on this but we try.
people who loudly proclaim they're not into fashion are often doing so bc they want people to know they're not superficial. instead, they are high-minded and "serious." in doing so, they are committing the same sins of vanity and pride that they criticize the fashion industry for
