Well, the day has finally come. #TheDeeplyFormedLife is officially launched into the world!
I’m attempting to offer a more expansive vision of spiritual formation.
I hope God meets you though the pages (or in the listening, via audiobook). Much love.
Here are two courageous books I believe are going to help light the church's path into the future. Looking forward to @RevDocBrenda's book, Becoming Brave & @richvillodas soon to be released book, The Deeply Formed Life. Look for them wherever books are sold!
One of my regular points of pastoral angst in this pandemic is wondering how spiritually and relationally connected people are in our community.
The weekly gathering provided so many small "check-ins" that went a long way.
Smh.
The ability to articulate theological truths well does not necessarily mean that one is an obedient servant of God. Unfortunately, some use their abilities and theological knowledge to cover sin.
If integrity of character is not the marker then gifts can easily seduce us.
Pastors are not CEOs.
Churches are not corporations.
Members of the community are not investors.
We are shepherds.
We are a new family.
We are a community of servants.
The last Census missed almost 1 million children of which 400,000 were #Latinx children under 5. When children are not counted, critical programs such as #CHIP, Head Start, and #WIC won’t receive the right amount of funding. In this #2020Census#CuéntanosCampaign#FaithfulCensus
"...we Latinos have a lot to learn from the African-American struggle for civil rights. As MLK Jr. told the labor leader Cesar Chavez... 'Our separate struggles are really one — a struggle for freedom, for dignity and for humanity.'" @jorgeramosnews https://t.co/cZGJB1ha6C
I’ve heard stories of people leaving mega churches because their pastor is “preaching social justice over the gospel.”
Sigh.
This makes me wonder how many predominantly white mega churches would be mega in size if they consistently preached a gospel that reflected justice.
James Cone writing about Reinhold Niebuhr's ambivalence towards racial justice is eye opening.
Cone notes that although Niebuhr had exceptional social and theological analysis about the race problem, he lacked true empathy to do anything about it.
This is still a problem.
Black people shouldn’t need to be morally perfect & spotless in order to deserve life & dignity.
Bearing God’s image should be enough......
