ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ORDER FILED BY STUDENTS, ADVOCATES VS SAN MIGUEL CORP.
Students and environmental advocates attended a hearing before the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 41 on Monday regarding their petition for a temporary environmental protection order against San Miguel Corp. (SMC) over the massive tree cutting along Quirino Avenue in Manila.
“We are prompted to file this action in representation of the youth and those yet unborn because we also want to send a message to these corporations that are actively destroying our environment,” petitioner Joaquin Bautista said.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said there are 523 trees subject to tree-cutting and another 94 trees for earth-balling, totaling 617 trees affected to yield construction for the Southern Access Link Expressway (SALEX).
Bautista said the citizen action suit aims to pursue ecological justice and accountability, stressing that SMC should rehabilitate the trees cut in Manila.
The irreparable damage from this ecological violence will be inherited by succeeding generations, sustainability and environment student Elisha Zantua said.
“It can cause catastrophic effects such as eliminating the structure of preventing soil erosion, lessening the capabilities to absorb the floodwater, and affecting the air quality around the space,” she said.
“What we really need right now is more green spaces. We shouldn’t just prioritize urban development over what the people actually need,” Zantua added.
University student and petitioner Paul Benedict Callorina lamented how decades-old trees, which have stood long before he was born, were brazenly cut for an expressway project.
“Our policies and laws should be pro-people and pro-nature,” Callorina said.
The DENR said last week that SMC has voluntarily suspended further tree-cutting activities along Quirino Avenue following the public outrage. | @andronquillo

SOLID BLOC 11: THIS IS NOT SENATE INDEPENDENCE BUT A BOYCOTT OF DUTY
The Solid Bloc 11 minority senators were present today for the 5 p.m. resumption of session, ready to work, ready to vote on pending bills and ready to keep the Senate running, but the majority led by SP Cayetano chose not to show up.
They did not even have the courtesy to inform us when they ignored the rules, and could not extend the basic decency of telling the minority that they had no intention of convening.
Let us focus on the work, because the Senate has serious business before it, and if the majority wants to protest, deliver privilege speeches or defend its position, the proper place to do that is on the floor, not by making the chamber stand still.
Important measures were left hanging because of the majority’s boycott, including the Magna Carta of Barangay Health Workers, the Anti-Hospital Detention Bill, the confirmation of generals before the Commission on Appointments and the bills granting Philippine citizenship to Bennie Boatwright III and Matthew James Ramos.
Let us call this for what it is: the claim that this is about Senate independence is false, because what happened today was about the rule of law, public accountability and a lawful process before the Ombudsman and the Sandiganbayan that no senator, no bloc and no presiding officer controls.
This is a boycott because of the arrest of Senator Jinggoy Estrada, and the public should not be asked to believe another convenient line from a leadership that has repeatedly twisted the truth.
Today was a step toward accountability in a controversy that the public has long demanded action on, and after years of people asking why nothing was happening in flood control investigations, it is unacceptable to suddenly call the rule of law an attack on the Senate.
Is Senate President Alan Cayetano now questioning the rule of law?
This may be the first time in decades that Senate work stopped because the presiding officer himself refused to work, because even during typhoons and the height of the pandemic, work was suspended only because of necessity or because systems still had to be set up, not because the leadership chose a boycott of duty.
The public has every right to ask whether SP Cayetano is repeating what he did in the House of Representatives, when questions were raised about a leader refusing to step aside, refusing to convene and holding up proceedings when the numbers were no longer certain.
The question now is just as serious: will they do this again for the next two session days, and will they keep the Senate idle simply to avoid facing the numbers on the floor?
The Senate should open its doors, call the session to order and return to work, because no Facebook post, no appeal to institutional pride and no political drama can erase the basic duty of senators to show up, follow the law and serve the people.
And lastly, we call on the Filipino people to watch the Senate closely, because when an institution refuses to work, public vigilance becomes the people’s first line of defense.
ML Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima has filed a bill seeking to impose an annual ultra-wealth tax on the country’s billionaires, particularly those whose net taxable assets exceed P1 billion.
De Lima’s House Bill No. 9274, or the “Ultra-Wealth Tax Act,” proposes to amend some provisions of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997. She noted that several consumption taxes heavily burden the poor and the middle class.

Philippine mass transit so fucked up that this was the line for the EDSA Carousel at around 11 p.m.
MRT was already closed. Angkas wasn’t viable because of the rain + Grab/ID was either impossible to book or too expensive. So walang choice kundi pumila sa kakaunti/punuang bus.
One of my college professors used to say "anything worth doing is worth doing poorly." I didn't understand that for years because I didn't do anything poorly, I couldn't do anything poorly, I had to Do Everything Perfectly.
But brushing your teeth for 30 seconds is better than not brushing them at all when that 2 minutes seems exhausting. Doing ten minutes of yoga is better than 10 minutes of sitting when 30 minutes of cardio sounds impossible.
Changing my clothes is good when a whole shower is impossible. Standing on the porch for a few minutes is worth it after being in the house for three straight days because I don't have the energy to go anywhere.
Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly... because doing it poorly is better than not doing it.

Filipinos deserve fair access to entertainment events, not overpriced tickets and abusive resellers.
To combat this abusive practice, we filed House Bill No. 9171 or the "Anti-Ticket Scalping Law", which seeks to protect consumers by prohibiting ticket scalping, particularly the unauthorized resale of tickets at prices exceeding 10% above face value.
Metro Manila does not need anymore expressways. Metro Manila BADLY needs more train lines, a subway, and a unified bus/jeep system.
It will probably take longer than you think to build your dream life so don’t get caught up watching everybody else live theirs. Focus on building your own & don’t give up too early.
