BREAKING: VIRUS FROM NEVADA DAIRY WORKER WITH BIRD FLU HAS THE SAME GENETIC MUTATION seen in the Nevada cows – a change of PB2 D701N that has previously been assoc with more efficient virus replication in ppl & mammals.
@CDCgov told @FortuneMagazine that the D1.1 variant in this worker is the same strain of the virus that likely also infected 15 PEOPLE across Iowa, Louisiana, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin in 2024. This change was previously identified in a human case in Chile in 2023. No other changes assoc with mammalian adaption were identified in the sequence data of the Nevada case.
The CDC didn't identify any changes in the sequence data from the NV person that might impact antigenicity or susceptibility to antivirals. However, the virus will undergo further analysis & testing.

@EnemyInAState There are many mdx tests that are commercially available that don’t use the CDC primers/probes. Also, mfgs look at whether or not sequence variations could have an impact on their test and if likelihood is high based on in silico analysis they do testing with that strain.
Such a great discussion on the BA.5 potential impacts. Especially since I’m likely suffering from BA.5 this round (after OG in 2020 and BA.2 in April). It’s no joke, albeit not as bad as OG was for me (healthy 40 something), been sick for 10 days now.

As Omicron recedes in NYC, the benefit of the vaccines is so incredibly clear.
They prevented infections.
And reduced hospitalizations A LOT.
And drastically lowered the likelihood of dying from Covid.
