@lucicityy@casadeesamitus 2. There is already a 6-9 billion dollar deficit on the horizon for fiscal year 28. You can’t defer pension payments indefinitely.
@lucicityy@casadeesamitus 1. Yes and the issue is there is no indication that mamdani has done so. It’s early but all indications are that NYC’s housing crisis will continue to get worse, and it has done so during his term. His budget filling this year is little more than a stopgap.
@lucicityy@casadeesamitus I would object to the idea that NYC shifted right so much as it shifted against the establishment. This is why zohran/trump voting wasn’t that uncommon especially in Muslim communities. And I seriously don’t see how that shows he would succeed nationally.
@lucicityy@casadeesamitus The problem is while most people like universal childcare they don’t care all that much about it. Look at polling on voters priorities. Voters will absolutely choose what they believe gives them spiritual or communal wellbeing over material wellbeing, it’s not that uncommon.
@lucicityy@casadeesamitus That’s just demonstrably untrue? Look at white evangelical Protestants, ideology matters a ton. Cuomo losing can easily be explained by the fact that he was uniquely scandal plagued and unpopular, as well as a general anti establishment tilt in recent elections.
@lucicityy@casadeesamitus Sure, he beat a scandal plagued unpopular politician. That’s irrelevant to the fact that he isn’t very popular even in the one place where leftism is prominent enough to actually turn him into an executive.
@lucicityy@casadeesamitus He’s not beloved. His approval rating is barely above water in the most left city in America. He’d get massacred if he ran for president.
@shanewallick@isaCatholicGuy What the fuck does cognitive capacity have to do with it? Pigs and crows have greater amounts of it than human infants, should we prioritize their welfare over babies?
@abbaraaaa@nikicaga Of course. But creating the factories to make those munitions takes time. Nigeria’s domestic weapons manufacturing is currently quite primitive. Assuming another power like the U.S. doesn’t step in they will run out of advanced munitions long before they play a decisive role.
@abbaraaaa@nikicaga That Air Force has substantially struggled to defeat Islamic militants with quite primitive weaponry. If you assume they can throw the entire Wehrmacht & Luftwaffe into it, Nigeria simply won’t have enough munitions to kill more than a fraction.
Lina Khan has a bunch of great thoughts about how it should be illegal to scam consumers, and then a lot of whacky antitrust ideas that did not seem to work very well.
