The magnificent Medusa Mosaic (1st Century AD), an ancient Roman masterpiece located in the Kibyra Ancient City near Gölhisar in the Burdur province, Türkiye 🇹🇷

The mosaic spans approximately 11m across and adorns orchestra floor of the city's beautifully preserved Odeon (a 3,600-seat music hall, courthouse, and assembly room). This roughly 2,000-year-old artwork is incredibly well-preserved, with about 95% of its original composition completely intact. It depicts the mythological head of Medusa, used in classical antiquity as a Gorgoneion—a protective amulet designed to ward off malevolent forces and evil spirits.

What makes this specific depiction entirely unique in the ancient world is its Opus Sectile technique.

Unlike traditional mosaic work (opus tessellatum) that uses thousands of tiny uniform cubes, opus sectile utilizes custom-cut, thin plates of colored marble. The artisans carefully sliced white, red, green, brown, and grey marble pieces to shape the geometric rays, flowing hair, and highly expressive, contemporary-looking facial features.

Because of the mosaic's delicacy and placement in an open-air historical site, expert restorers carefully cover the entire floor with five protective layers during the harsh winter months.

Hace 1.100 años, alguien en Escandinavia cosió un trozo de cuero sobre un hueso de caballo y se puso a deslizarse sobre el hielo de los fiordos. No como deporte. Como transporte.

Los patines de la fotografía pertenecen al siglo X y combinan dos materiales que los vikingos tenían en abundancia: cuero de animal para la parte superior y hueso de caballo pulido para la cuchilla. El hueso se lijaba hasta conseguir una superficie lo bastante lisa para deslizarse, se ataba con cuerdas a la bota existente y se usaba apoyando un palo con punta de hierro para impulsarse, de manera similar a como se usa un bastón de esquí hoy.

No había cuchilla de acero. No había filo cortante. La velocidad se conseguía por la porosidad mínima del hueso pulido en contacto con la capa microscópica de agua que se forma sobre el hielo bajo la presión del peso. Exactamente el mismo principio físico que usan los patines modernos, solo que con una cuchilla que tardaba horas en prepararse y se desgastaba con el uso.

Lo que hace fascinante este objeto es su función. Los fiordos y lagos escandinavos en invierno eran autopistas naturales: congelados, planos y que conectaban comunidades que en verano necesitaban barcas. Los patines de hueso podían multiplicar la velocidad de desplazamiento sobre el hielo respecto a caminar, lo que los hacía valiosos para el comercio, la comunicación y, en caso necesario, para escapar de alguien que no llevara patines.

Se han encontrado patines de hueso similares en toda Europa, desde Escandinavia hasta los Países Bajos y el centro de Rusia. El más antiguo documentado tiene 3.000 años. Los últimos en usarse como transporte cotidiano en algunas regiones de los Países Bajos llegaron hasta el siglo XIX.
