Uh huh. Universal design practice please, says this professional who just did a two day PD using free voice recognition tech. Brain and eye fatigue and cognitive processing overload from reading 60-75% captioning accuracy and lipreading in other times.
Attending conferences as a deaf person comes with a whole slew of accessibility & inclusion issues. While most people feel excitement, I feel anxiety. As I prepare to present at the @AAASmeetings with several colleagues on STEM sign language, here are my thoughts over the years:
The term 'language deprivation' does not get changed to 'language access' just because one does not like it. Language deprivation exists and it's shit. Softening the language is not an excuse to pretend it's not there. Hearing privilege does not supersede deaf lived experience.
