"The Ontario Liberals, NDP & Greens all came together to call on the government to bring forward new rules in a rare show of united opposition. At an event on Wednesday morning, the three parties & advocates called for urgent action from the government." https://t.co/iwP0Rl67Bv
Why are municipally elected officials held to a lower standard of treatment than every other worker in Ontario? Very good question @ejhINT #womenofontariosayno https://t.co/Ju4jFwnrIc
What’s behind property taxes in Canada? @caora_mck explains.

“Property taxes pay for services offered by municipalities. This includes but is not limited to: policing, firefighting, parks and recreation, libraries, road infrastructure (fixing potholes, replacing sidewalks, installing bike lanes), water services, waste collection and snow clearing.”
Local leaders are advocating for a new municipal growth framework – which would provide predictable funding linked to economic and population growth and enable #CDNMuni to continue rising to the acute national challenges of housing and homelessness, climate change, infrastructure renewal and more.
Canada’s housing challenge is also an infrastructure challenge. We cannot build new housing without putting in place the municipal water, wastewater, transportation and community infrastructure that provides the critical foundation for Canadians’ quality of life.
FCM is calling for a new Municipal Growth Framework that better aligns municipal revenue with economic growth and population growth and will help fund these infrastructure needs. More here: https://t.co/Pz1T6TPYfF
"The rise in pedestrian and cyclist deaths is first and foremost a product of design: design of cities, design of streets, design of vehicles. To the extent that we can trace it to behavior, it is behavior that has been inculcated by those design choices." https://t.co/zIxkGQxyy7
It’s the last week for @gotransit@metrolinx service to and from #StratfordON. Hoping that GO can offer an alternative that will get the growing number of @PerthCounty commuters who rely on this service where they need to go. @PrabSarkaria

After 2 teenagers died from being struck while biking on the sidewalk of Old Georgetown Road, the State Highway Administration installed 3 miles of protected bike lanes.
The result? Virtually no change in driving time, but a plunge in fatalities and tripling of bicycle traffic.
This video camera study showed that less than 5% of people on bikes break traffic laws while riding, yet 66% of people do so when driving. And if you REALLY want even MORE bike-riders to obey laws, build more protected bike infrastructure. Via @carltonreid https://t.co/fP5NYJOkXy
Community volunteers, seasonal City workers and members of Stratford’s Energy & Environment Committee were busy today weeding the planting beds on the crib walls along the north side of Lake Victoria.
These not only help to prevent erosion, but also contribute to biodiversity.
This Spanish city centre has been car-free for 20 years. 12k people have moved into the centre since the ban. The Mayor says vehicles don’t have more right to public space than people — & he’s been re-elected 4 times since banning cars. Pontevedra via @WEF
@cathmckenna thanks for your mention of the anti-harassment and abuse by municipal elected officials legislation - an important legislation that the @fordnation government has promised will be coming forward ASAP #thewomenofontariosayno
Great to meet fellow Climate Barbie @cathmckenna at the AMO conference, after an excellent panel discussion on women in leadership and politics. #amo2023#womeninpolitics
City design is making cities hotter. Here’s the fix: the hottest spots in cities have less than 6% vegetation cover, while the coolest spots in most cities have over 70%. Add trees everywhere to cool cities. https://t.co/xiSTgJxKUN
Our streets have an enormous impact on our lives: How are they designed and for whom? Cars or people?
Choosing the latter increases the autonomy of children; improves sociability among citizens; and creates more gender, age, and ability-equitable places.

Humans outlive their ability to drive safely by ten years, yet most cities are built on the assumption they’ll do it forever.
To allow for successful aging in place, we must rethink our car-first streets and provide amenities within a short walk or roll.

22% of Canadian homebuilders cancel projects amid high rates despite severe housing shortage. I predicted this a year ago and now we have the data.
This is going to get worse before it gets better - it would be great to see a crisis level response to this from our Federal gov't, because that is what we need.
Financing is a major challenge. Major. The gov't needs to step up and use all of the mechanisms in its power, through CMHC, to respond to this moment.
Slow approvals processes were a problem in the past - today the issue is financing as a result of high interest rates. These projects being cancelled already have planning/zoning approvals. Think about that for a second - this is a major shift in just two years.
Crisis level response required from all levels of government.
