To the extent any of them care what America thinks, we urge them to remain peaceful—and we expect they will. Why oh why doesn’t our establishment accept that its only moral obligation is to the British state and the British people?

Not to global welfare.

Not to international liberalism.

To us, and our country, and our self-government. That is it.

The moment they do that, so many of the issues which plague our society become easier to manage.

Immigration is no longer a question of benefitting the largest number of global citizens but about boosting the British economy while keeping British people safe.

Foreign relations is not about promoting obscure minority rights in far off lands but about securing British interests wherever necessary.

And most of all we drop the idea that every culture in the world is the same and therefore anybody can fit in here, and celebrate the fact that Britain has a highly distinct, highly evolved culture all of its own that we want to cherish and protect.

I'm often called a Zionist because I broadly support the IDF operation in Gaza, but I support that for the same reason I support Trump's incursion into Venezuela. I do not believe in proportionality when it comes to securing the interests of your own people. It's refreshing to see decisive action instead of the usual empty threats and forelock tugging. As much as anything, given the scale of drug deaths in the USA (exceeding that of any deathtoll in your average civil war), it becomes a matter of foreign policy. I'm not going to shed any tears if Trump blows drug boats out of the water, and I don't really care if South American thugocracies are toppled either - same as I don't care if Hamas and Hezbollah are wiped out. Sometimes you have to attack the problem at source.

If conservatism is not ultimately about economics, what is it about?

'The defence of the West.'

This, in one short, simple phrase is as near as I can come to expressing the overall mission of conservatives now. That defence involves securing our nations against internal and external threats alike.

I shall enlarge on those threats in a minute. But what are the core convictions we are defending? Not having time to pen a treatise, or even speak as long as a German politician, I shall set out my views with English brevity.

We conservatives believe that man has a basic sense of right and wrong and an amazing creativity when free to apply his talents; but we also believe that his nature is flawed, such that without restraints applied by convention and law he will destroy himself and others.

We believe in free, limited democratic government, as the framework most likely to minimise opportunities for mischief and abuse of power; but we scorn the association of vox populi with vox dei, knowing that no mere majority vote can make what is good bad or what is bad good.

We understand that in some areas government has to be strong. It has to be prepared to use force to defend the nation's security. We appreciate the majesty and rituals and pomp of the state, operating in its proper sphere. But we also believe that what is public ultimately exists for what is private—that it is the family (not the state or nation or even the Church), which is the basic institution of our society, without which all the rest collapses.

We are suspicious of attempts at institutional change, unless those institutions have become in their present form a threat to the whole future of the country—as the trade unions and nationalised industries were, for instance, in Britain when I became Prime Minister.

We view the world in which we live as in need, not of re-ordering according to master plans devised by enlightened experts, but rather of constant renewal according to timeless truths and rich traditions.

And so we are unashamedly patriots. For as Edmund Burke wrote two hundred years ago:

“To be attached to the sub-division, to love the little platoon to which we belong in society, is the first principle of public affection. It is the first link in the series by which we proceed towards a love of our country and to mankind”.

So here we stand. Rock solid. Rooted in a clear, tried, tested view of the world and the heavens and everything in them.

Three reasons to oppose Labour's Capital Gains Tax.

Labour are proposing a new tax, on capital assets. Why? The New Zealand Government taxes equal 34 per cent of the economy. That’s just over the average for developed countries (33.9) and higher than Australia (29.4). Even without a Capital Gains Tax, our Government is a high taxer. A capital gains tax would make us even higher still. Our goal should be to tax less so people who take risks and strive for a better tomorrow keep more of that they make.

They say it will fund free GP visits, but it won’t deliver revenue for years (because it takes years for assets to gain value and become taxable). If they won the election they’d want to deliver the free doctor visits straight away, but it couldn’t be funded by the Capital Gains Tax. The idea that it’s linked to doctors’ visits is just marketing, not an actual policy. Free doctors visits are not even a good idea, people who can make a contribution should make one, it means people go when they need to, and the relationship stays real.

There’s something else unspoken, though, that is worrying about this whole proposal. The unspoken bit is ‘we’ll take from someone else to solve your problems.’ The truth is our society will not thrive on scapegoating. Every year it’s someone new. When rents were high it was landlords. When there was a terror attack it was Licensed Firearm Owners. When petrol was expensive it was petrol companies. When farmers do well, they’re bad people ruining the environment. Labour are tapping the same tall poppy spirit, yet again. It’s getting tired. Fair is fair and people should pay their taxes, but we already pay more than most. Another tax is not the solution to our problems.
