If you love Texas public schools, imperfect as they may be, take a mental snapshot of 2025.

As our Governor cited, there are many, many excellent public schools across Texas producing great results despite underpaid professionals and the State's lack of funding.

And, as many critics have cited, Texas also has a number of struggling schools. Yet, to paint schools as struggling is myopic at the very least and, in most cases, intentionally misleading and inaccurate.

Even within "struggling schools," these facts remain:
There are remarkable instances of learning taking place every single day.
Teachers, aides, parents, and administrators work hard to ensure children are safe, loved, and cared for as they are pushed to achieve their potential.
Our Governor has been in office since 2015. Since then, he has been both directly and indirectly responsible for TEA, the managing agency tasked with ensuring that all Texas schools meet the needs of every student.
The Texas constitution states, "Sec. 1. SUPPORT AND MAINTENANCE OF SYSTEM OF PUBLIC FREE SCHOOLS. A general diffusion of knowledge being essential to the preservation of the liberties and rights of the people, it shall be the duty of the Legislature of the State to establish and make suitable provision for the support and maintenance of an efficient system of public free schools.

So, after the "school choice" or vouchers bill is passed, remember what the State of public schools in Texas looked like in 2025...because 10 years from now, we will be in a decidedly worse situation. With the influx of vouchers, public school districts will have fewer resources, more decrepit facilities, underpaid professionals, larger class sizes, and less qualified personnel...the memory of what public schools did for our communities will be greatly diminished in the name of "competition."

The reality is that public schools have always competed for student enrollment, as Texas parents have always had school choice.

The fact is, instead of building up our public schools to ensure Texas has the premier public school system in the United States, we will now be subsidizing private school parents to attend schools that do not play by the same standardized set of rules public schools have been playing by since the dawn of the accountability movement.

Private schools will now have the choice, not parents. Do not be fooled. If your child doesn't meet the ideological standards of a private school, they will not be accepted. If your child has special needs, they may not be accepted. If your child lives in a rural community and cannot travel to the nearest private school, they will not be accepted.

The bottom line is that this was always about providing subsidies to private school parents, incentivizing private schools to grow in an attempt to replace public schooling, and further segregating our public school system.

Take a mental snapshot now...in 2025.

The legacies of those who vote in favor of vouchers will be forever tied to this moment and what will become of our proud public school system.
