I do get tired of people trying to discredit our faith by saying that we are “leftists” or “communists”… not because it hurts my feelings but because it just feels like lazy hubris and sloppy hermeneutic.

Many of the things that a lot of Christians support aren’t very Christlike at all… they’re just done for political expediency or in the name of pragmatism, because the idea of loving your enemies or giving everything you have to the poor seem unrealistic and radical even though they are exactly what Jesus taught.

Some stuff like calling for a ceasefire in Gaza is not about Left and Right… it’s about right and wrong. No genuine Christian can defend the atrocities being committed by the State of Israel just as no genuine Christian can defend the atrocities carried out by Hamas on October 7.

And many issues like welcoming immigrants, caring for widows and orphans, feeding the hungry, protesting militarism and war… these are not Republican things or Democrat things… these are JESUS things. They are at the heart of the Gospel.

(And the truth is I think Jesus is even more radical than Karl Marx.)
