🚨 Reconciliation Violated:
Muskoday First Nations Leadership Hands Housing Contracts to Settler Company Zaks While Ignoring Local Indigenous Builders?
As a residential school survivor from Muskoday First Nation, I survived the very system designed to break us. I carry the scars of residential school trauma every single day. We were promised Truth and Reconciliation — real action, not empty words. Yet decisions around housing and construction on our own lands look like a direct violation of that promise.
Muskoday has pressing housing needs. We have a new 40-lot subdivision project underway (with utilities, roads, and grading) to address current shortages and future growth on reserve. This should be a golden opportunity for economic reconciliation, Indigenous self-determination, and community healing — creating jobs for band members, survivors’ families, and our youth.
Instead, concerns are growing that a non-Indigenous settler-owned company — Zaks Building (Zak’s Building Group) from Hague, Saskatchewan — is being chosen without proper open community tendering or transparent procurement. Zaks specializes in homes and commercial builds but is an external settler business with no deep roots in Muskoday. This sidelines capable local Indigenous contractors like my company, Keyhew Builders.
Keyhew Builders (named after the Cree word “Kihew” for eagle — symbolizing strength and vision) holds the Muskoday First Nation Commercial Business License authorizing new home builds, renovations, roofing, framing, finishing, and general maintenance right here on reserve. We bring OH&S-certified expertise, local knowledge, and a commitment to hiring and training community members. We are fully ready and capable of delivering high-quality work that keeps economic benefits, jobs, and skills inside Muskoday.
This raises serious questions about fiduciary duty breaches, lack of transparency, and procurement violations that contradict:
TRC Call to Action #92 on business and reconciliation (equitable Indigenous access to jobs/training, sustainable community benefits, and education on residential school history).
Principles of free, prior, and informed consent, economic reconciliation, and decolonizing procurement.
Muskoday’s own Land Code legacy of asserting control over our lands and resources.
True reconciliation means prioritizing Indigenous-owned businesses like Keyhew Builders over outside settler companies. Handing work to Zaks without open tendering perpetuates intergenerational trauma, blocks economic self-determination, and fails the spirit of reconciliation and the Calls to Action. It is not reconciliation — it is the same old pattern of decisions made without genuine community input or accountability.
Muskoday deserves better.
We demand:
Full public disclosure of all housing and construction contracts and the exact tendering processes used.
Clear Indigenous procurement preferences and local-first policies that support companies, capable community contractors and workers with a long standing legacy of building for Muskoday First Nations.
Real community consultation so band members can hold leadership accountable.
Survivors did not endure residential school so our children could watch opportunities flow off-reserve. If you’re a Muskoday member, ally, or believer in genuine reconciliation — share this post, comment, and demand transparency!
Our lands. Our housing. Our economic future. No more violations of reconciliation.
