Maybe I'm too much of Schumpeterian believer in creative destruction, but the main attraction of capitalism to me is precisely that it is an enemy of any sort of traditionalism, whether right-wing or left-wing.

Its liberatory power is precisely that all of us, as individuals and groups, are constantly remaking the world to better reflect our desires and wants. It doesn't create a world that is unrecognizable from one day to the next but capitalism--and the liberalism from which it grows--is massively disruptive to the status quo. It is the reason why we don't live in the same world as our grandparents and why today's world is immensely richer, looser, and freer.

'The opening up of new markets, foreign or domestic, and the organizational development from the craft shop to such concerns as U.S. Steel illustrate the same process of industrial mutation—if I may use that biological term—that incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one,' wrote Schumpeter. 'This process of Creative Destruction is the essential fact about capitalism.'

Schumpeter was a staunch defender of free enterprise as the economic application of classical liberal values and the engine by which living standards rose. 'The capitalist achievement does not typically consist in providing more silk stocking for queens but in bringing them within the reach of factory girls in return for a steadily decreasing amount of effort,' he wrote, initiating the sort of analysis that undergirds new books such as @Marian_L_Tupy and @galepooley's important Superabundance.

As Marx and Engels noted in The Communist Manifesto, under capitalism, everything solid dissolves into air, the sacred becomes the profane: 'All fixed, fast-frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions, are swept away, all new-formed ones become antiquated before they can ossify. All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned...The bourgeoisie has through its exploitation of the world market given a cosmopolitan character to production and consumption in every country. To the great chagrin of Reactionists, it has drawn from under the feet of industry the national ground on which it stood. All old-established national industries have been destroyed or are daily being destroyed.'

I don't know the situation or the leadership at Harley Davidson and I'm sure the CEO is a woke idiot who is driving a dying brand into the ground. But social conservatives and traditionalists who believe that capitalism will allow them to freeze the world forever in the image they prefer are as fundamentally mistaken as socialists who incorrectly denounce capitalism for lowering standards of living.

In the wake of the Cold War, conservatives and left-wing critics of 'consumerism' (read: other people buying shit *I* don't like) found common cause denouncing libertarians who celebrated increased global trade, both in goods and culture. The Weekly Standard praised The Baffler, just as now you see the far left and far right coming together in the pages of @compactmag. Reactionaries hate capitalism because it doesn't respect the past even as it improves upon it and leaves space for people, however angry with other people's choices, to create their own subcultures.

@catalinmpit I went back to school at 29 to study CS and started doing dev. work a few years later. I used to be a graphic artist / video editor, but got bored. Definitely required hard work, but was worth it in the end.
