Hampden-Sydney long snapper Jake Allen made the trip to Eau Claire, WI to chase perfection.
This was Jake’s first time training with me, and we started from the ground up to make sure he had the right foundation to build on. Most long snappers can get the ball to the target. That’s usually not the real issue. The goal is learning how to move more efficiently to create better consistency, more speed, and overall better performance.
When we evaluate where an athlete currently is versus where they want to be, we often have to rewire how they mentally approach the movement before physical changes can truly stick.
Jake was initiating his snap by pulling the ball, which caused him to push through the finish and disconnect his body from the throw. Even though he thought pulling quicker would create more speed, it was actually costing him speed and efficiency. He wasn’t able to flow correctly or transfer energy through the movement the way he needed to.
We also focused heavily on balancing his hands and being deliberate with his punch. Once he started controlling his body better, the ball immediately became cleaner and more consistent. When you control the body, you control the ball.
Jake did a great job making adjustments, and I’m excited to continue helping him chase perfection!

Elliott Avent gave everything to NC State baseball.
He deserved a better ending. But no ending could diminish what he built.
Thank you, Coach Avent! 🙏🏻💯🐺
