"There is no scale on X. X is super important. Here we develop a scale, & our validation study show it has decent properties. However, we obviously don't share our scale. Nor tell you where to get it. Nor rules about its use."
How👏does👏this👏still👏get👏published👏in👏2021?
Just found ADHD scale validation paper tested only in folks with ADHD. This makes no sense, & we should not publish measurement papers like this. Because following this logic, my ADHD scale "have you ever eaten cheese" is better than theirs.
We need sensitivity AND specificity.
There is a broad coalition in 🇳🇱 academia trying to improve the status quo.
Not surprisingly, there were quick responses to a number of recent pieces pushing back against reforms. You can find these rebuttals here. 🧵
One meaningful part of my defense day was wearing my grandpa’s hood from his PhD in chemistry from Purdue in 1948. He isn’t with us today, but I was so grateful to have this reminder of him and our family history with me—although he was a chemist, he always loved geology. 🪨🔨
@andrealgilmore Same, they rarely do me any good. But if it literally takes up my whole screen, doesn't leave, and I can't do anything else while it's there it's a little harder to ignore Drastic, maybe, but effective. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@andrealgilmore (2/2) include a message to yourself about why you should stop (e.g., Whatever you're doing can wait until tomorrow. Go snuggle your kids/dog.)
If working from home, keep your digital lives as separate as possible. You might create "Work" & "Home" accounts & never mix them.
@andrealgilmore (1/2) If you can, use a reminder app to push a notification at the end of the day to stop working. (I set mine to be full-screen for a few minutes & I can't click to ignore it; this is great to interrupt hyperfocus.) I use the same thing for telling myself to go to bed. You might
Y’all. If you are moved by someone, by someone’s work, by their friendship, anything — TELL THEM. You don’t know how much they might need that ounce of encouragement, to feel noticed, to feel like their efforts are worthwhile.
@GregAbbott_TX Tonight, Gov. Abbott did not try to "stamp out hate with decency." The only thing he stamped out is the life of #QuintinJones, a Black man sent to his death even as the victim's family pleaded for his life. Very "decent" of you, Governor.
This semester in my Psychopathology class, I tried something different. Rather than assigning a regular final paper, I gave my students the freedom to choose any medium they wanted for their final project. Thread! 1/10
"In the absence of psychometrically reliable measurements that complement clinical assessments, we cannot deliver good therapeutics that target etiologic mechanisms or identify early signs that would enable preventive approaches." 💯
"Psychometrics is... a pluralist research area, & it is this plurality that needs cherishing. This does not mean that we should just ‘let things be pluralist’ & each go our own ways, which is [...] happening now." A fabulous opportunity for consilience... if we get after it!
Interesting work on the past, present, and future of psychometrics by Lisa Wijsen & @BorsboomDenny.
Lisa interviewed 20 past Psychometric Society presidents for the project!

No one is immune from making mistakes, but we can implement systems that make errors in research less likely.
To help, I've created "Error Tight: Exercises for Lab Groups to Prevent Research Mistakes."

1) Here is my experience with the General #GRE as a #Disabled psych student (thread). #Disability#GRExit#DisabilityTwitter#AcademicTwitter This is a hurtful, vulnerable topic for me, so I considered not Tweeting about it. But it’s important to understand and humanize.

Steve Hayes interviewed on his start as a political organizer before he was a researcher and how this has affected his approach to science. My most meaningful interview yet.
